Are abilties considered magic or spell damage?

Basically both.
Spells detects attack type. So if a unit is magic immune, spells will not affect them.
Magic detects damage type. It gets affected by armor, as mentioned above. And so is other spell reduction abilities.

Then again, it could be vice versa. The terms are pretty confusing sometimes.

Are abilties like warstomp, shockwave, forked lightning, etc considered spell or magic damage or both?

The answers so far are very ambiguous if not wrong.

I advise you to first read this and then return with questions.

If you want a short version: hardcoded spells mostly use attack type spells and some magic equivalent damage type. Also every damage instance has an attack type and a damage type.
