Anyway, I'd suggest Death Note, since it's the only anime series I've ever watched more
than a couple episodes of, but I guess everyone's either seen it or hates it already.

anime... mecha and stuff...

Basically: A great scientist (who apparently is quite still young, and is the sister of one of the leading ladies) developed machines called Infinite Stratos (IS)... but for some reason only girls can use it... and she only made a specific number of the IS Cores, so countries work with a definite amount of IS only... And there is an IS academy for training the pilots... Then one day, the main character (which is a guy) accidentally went into a room with an IS, and miraculously, it activated... So now, he is popular among the girls...

Could have been a good show, its a canceled 3 year old cartoon btw. And to make matters worse, a person named Zone was able to push it more.

Anyway, I'd suggest Death Note.

The Anime is awesome, the live-action series meh.

Fucking Phil Mulloy and Intolerance I-III. Series of shorts narrating humanities first contact with an alien civilization that closely resembles humans, only with some traits (mostly body parts) switched around. He's firing twisted pot-shots at, among other things, human sexual normality. Pretty awesome.
