A question about "A unit is attacked" Event

When does this event actually fire? I haven't really had the time to do some trial and error so I'm taking my chances on asking here if someone already knows about this.

Is it when the attack order is given? Regardless of the range (range being the distance where the attacker can actually start doing the attack)?
Or is does the attacker have to be in range to actually do the attack?

It fires when the attack starts. The unit has to be in range to attack to fire this event, and it has to start attack animation. You can cancel attack animation and this still fires.
