Uh I recently got 3ds max and had no idea what was doing, the only thing that i figured out that was kinda helpful, was right click a sphere, and the convert it to a Editable Mesh and edit the vertexes ( was the only way i could shape an object into something cool, a basic helmet)

I don't know that much about 3ds max, but I'm pretty sure you misunderstood me

I ment, taking some shapes in 3ds max, making them the appropriate size, then converting it to an editable mesh

From there, you could do alot, like shape the vertexes into more interesting shapes, but thats about all I know

I don't know how to do texture mappings (connecting the skin to the model, i think)
I don't know how to make insanely complex shapes, like a dragon
I don't know how to use animations, or bones

This is the sad thing about people.
They are like "I WANT AXM SO I CAN MODEL AND IT BE AWESOMEE"
YET:
1. They have NEVER EVER had model making experience before
2. Got the wrong friggin version of max for warcraft (you need v4.2-5 for art tools to work with it)
3. They have no idea what a face or vertex is.
4. They probably got warcraft 3 last week and found this site and saw models.
5. They see awesome models and think it takes only a pinch to make "ohh..less than an hour and i have free model i made that is awesome :DDDDD"

and i dont want to type anymore of that.

But really.. before you friggin use one of the most complex BUT flexible 3d modeling programs in the world. I HIGHLY suggest you learn the basics before jumpin in the deep side of the pool and screaming for help and shouting at everyone.

/being nice off.

lol

Yeah one of those applied to me when i first started (not gonna say which X_x)

After about 3 hours of watching and reading tutorials I was like
"AHHH..... fuck it, ill use a different editor"

So I downloaded Magos, and now I can take off any weapon or some certain accessories from units that I may need, except thats about it (i also feel cool cuz i learned a thing or two about nodes xD)

I basicly learnt like 80% of what I know about the WE and 3DS max just from trying stuff out.

Its more fun then using tutorials and at some point you actualy know something.

Now im in a great need to read tutorials, but I do have some base knowledge, just from trying stuff.
It won't kill your computer x.X

Yeah, actually believe it or not I have messed up comp stuff enough so that I'm too careful to touch anything

A little fear in the back of my head says I'm gonna mess sumthin up

(took me about 2 months to learn the user CP for this site cuz of that, the big words scared me[didn't know exactly what it was refering too])

don't worry, you can't screw up ur computer by tinkering with 3ds max or WE, if you could my computer would have exploded by now. just start simple, make a sphere and use the different tools on it too see what they do, select faces and extrude or bevel and stuff... just play around.

just make sure u convert to editable poly by right clicking on it and going to convert to.

and right click the view and change it to edged faces so you can see what ur selecting.

practice practice practice... all the advice i can really give you.

good luck, don't give up.
