or you could add the watchers to the model and make them show only in alternate stand animations.

I don't know if you still plan to make changes to this, but how about adding some type of banner or different color posts to the back of it so it isn't so monotone? It's still very useful for arena maps either way.

imho it would be better to add those banners just with world editor (that is "terraining"). but i guess it might be useful, although you cant remove them with your terraining skills.
