Yes, another thread from the Shadows of Everwood ORPG team. This time regarding classes/playstyles that you wish to see in an ORPG game.

The question is simply what kind of classes you want to see? What playstyle do you want to see present? What mechanics do you wish to see in a class?

For those who are a little misled, here is are a couple of examples:

I would like to see a chronomancer class that uses the full force of time to simultaneously buff his allies and disable his foes. I'd like to see abilities that slow time, or even stop it completely. Such things affected by abilities like that would be allies, foes and even projectiles. I'd like to see 'rewind' abilities that reverse the effect of an enemy spell or restores the health/mana of an ally or even foe a few seconds beforehand.

I'd like to be able to play a bard who uses powerful ballads to keep his allies inspired. Maybe even make him a rogue-type class with fluteblades or something that give him a damaging edge. To further enhance the bard, maybe add a 'morale' mechanic to all classes that decreases the quality of skills, etc. as it decreases and use a bard to demoralize foes and keep the morale of his allies high!

Looking forward to seeing your responses!

Well here are some classes:
1. Tamer - This class uses manipulative/summoning spells. It is good for attacking large amounts of unit. Their abilities would be more of summoning ones. Or maybe an ability which stuns/ neutralizes some creeps. It should have weak attack but maybe high defence or speed. This class needs a LOT of mana. Attacks land units but can attack air with help of maybe some abilities.

2. Ninja/Assasin - This class has high speed/moderate intelligence, high attack speed but LOW attack. It should be good in stealth missions. Abilities should be does blink ones, quick strikes, and maybe some multiplying spells. There should be some stun spell/s for balance. This class is maybe a supporting one. Like he is good for supporting in engaging attacks with those tank/damage dealer classes. Attacks land units.

3. Draconic - Basically a half dragon half knight class. Great attack and defence but low attack speed and speed. Damage dealer class. Spells are something like destruction spells/wide damage dealing spells and maybe one - two transformation spells, which makes them a REAL dragon. A good one for dealing damage to bosses. Attacks land units.

Mentalist

Mostly an antimage class, but not only that. He can mind control weak enemies, so they will act as his minions. He can copy himself, confunsing enemies with "Mirror Images" like the blade master. He is able to turn a group of enemies insane, making them attack each other for a short time, or he can daze them, CCing them until theyre hurt or after the effect is over.
He is mostly an antimage class because he can burn or steal the mana of his enemies; maybe he could use a DOT on the enemy that hurts him harder, or longer, depending on the mana amount of the enemy.
Obviously he must be able to use an Interrupt ability, but also he could be able to copy an enemy's ability being cast.
He could use a Fear effect, or a Disorienting one.
He has a little amount of direct damage spells, but he can enhance allies with Fear Resistances, Spell Deflection, Fatigue Supression (something that makes allies slightly faster or stronger, but causes them to loose a little amount of their hitpoints, possibly after the effect passes). There are many adequate auras for a sorceror who plays with the mind of his allies and enemies, its up to those who create the class.

I hope you forgive my pityful english.

You should take a look at upcoming mmos or rpgs as they frequently come up with new ideas for classes like rift.

In order to give any ideas I'd like to know what classes your currently looking at and possibly filling in any more slots.

Having a Ranger with some abilities like the hunter, mixed in with some druid for the nature spells he/she has, and then some good pets for the Ranger as well.
Just would be cool to see some the Warcraft III heroes into WoW, like Tinkers for Goblins for special reasons, Beastmaster for the Horde and Alliance for pets, training in good arts and kinda like the hunter and warrior mixed.

I'd like a blademaster class. A melee fighter specialized in using two 1 handed blade to strike his enemy, always followed by a group of illusions that assists him. He could uses wind magic to enchants his weapon or deals damage at distance or even at melee.
Some Example
Mirror Image - summons an illusion to follows the hero until it dies. illusions deals x% of the hero's damage and takes x% of the damage the hero should take. When the hero casts a spell and Mirror Images are in range to cast it too, there is a chance that they also casts the spell, dealing X% of it's normal damage. Up to X illusions are possible at a time
Etheral Strike - Inflicts damage to the target and summons and additionnal copy. The hero can only have X illusions active at the same time
Wind Gust - A violent gust of wind appears in front of the hero, dealing damage to enemies in a cone and pushing them back

My second idea would be a hybrid warrior/warlock. The Demonic Knight. A powerful melee DPS or Tank that can uses powerful damaging curses to inflicts damage over time accompagned with his demon that will help him finishing his enemy. Or a powerful tank that uses crippling curses to weaken the damage they deal to him

I mean one class with A LOT of different weapons, which could easily fill the role of other classes in single player. Like it could fill a mobber's role with one of his weapons, and stuff like that. Sorry if I'm not clear enough.

Let me think...
Scout. A verstaille but vulnerable class, more suited for harassing, dealing damage, distracing and hit & run tactics. Able to use both ranged and melee weapons (Maybe has an ability to switch them or something, depending from game mechanics), high speed and low health, most of offencive abilities are mostly increasing dmage recieved by enemies or slowing the enemies in some way, also may have a "Spot Weakness" ability that is chanelled at enemy unit or area and makes the effected unit/units recieve more damage by revealing the enemy's weaknesses to the allies. Also has abilities that allow to avoid the combat by increasing his movement speed or removing debuffs (Specifically those that do not deal any damage but instead weaken/strenghten units).

Noticed the previus post just now...

So, from what I have read, you guys want to see:

  • a summoner/conjurer class
  • a rogue class with more fleet-footedness and range
  • a blademaster of sorts
  • a class specialising in anti-magic

Any other things you guys want to see in the classes that you would potentially be playing?

I'd lke to see a melee area-damage warrior, maybe some kind of a big brute with a heavy weapon or with spining blade, specialized on crowd control and somewhat tanking... yes, that would be awesome.
It could have abilities that allow to deal damage while moving (Like that Blademaster's ultimate ability), stuning or somewhat slowing enemies that are beeing damaged by the hero and Increasing it's own and nearby friendly unit's protection.

I'd like to have a pirate hero.
--------

On a little more serious note:
You can go wild with what you want, and I really mean it.
Don't be limited by the WC3 engine - we'll decide what to code and what to skip.

Some examples may be in order:

1: Tank.
Using damage-absorption skills he takes the damage his allies should have received.
--> This means he has can fuck threat to the max and just spam skills (strategically if I mind) during battle!

2: DPS.
A martial arts guy with 3 different fighting schools. Each school specializes in different
techniques ranging from 1vs1 to 1vs a lot!
In the 1v1 fighting school there are many self-perservation skills, whereas there are a lot of offensive, multi-target abilities in the other two.
--> This hero is very versatile and can be tailored to a close-range-fighting player's taste!

3: Healer.
Throws up ground-attached effects such as HoTs and debuffs, making him very useful for controlling the battle.
Has one pure healing tree and one pure debuffing tree.
--> Imagine the chaos this hero would create! ("Hey, stand over there!!", "No, get back here now!!!", "ARRRR! Get there now if you wish to live!!!")

These aren't really serious suggestions or examples, but they should give you some sort
of insight in what you can actually realize in your hero description.

A class which basically does nothing...

How about a Mime just like in FFT?

Or one that can copy the four last cast skills by an enemy?

Example:
Mime casts Skill Copy on Rexxar
Rexxar Casts Storm Bolt on Mime
Mime learns Storm Bolt and is able to use it
Rexxar Casts Summon Misha
Mime learns Summon Misha and is able to use it
Mime uses Skill Clear to clear all of his learnt skills

Like that.

That idea, I would say, would be excellent for a battle caster. I am beginning to develop a vision for the concept of a medium-armoured caster (who is able to materialize weapons, use melee/magical weapons, have illusions, etc.).

Actually yes, some character who can someway learn from his enemies would be cool...
Materialising weapons would allow to quickly the whole style hero is controlled. Like for example you are swarmed with lots of tinny enemies, so you switch to a huge warhammer. You kill them, and a slow bulky enemy appears, so you summon a magical staff that slows the enemy even more, without even letting him touch you...
That would be pretty intresting if that class couldn't use any normal weapons and would instead have to learn skills which would increase the effieciency of his weapons or allow to use new ones!

Like that.

My idea sounds pretty cool, but of course the skill's he'll learn will be a slightly weaker version of the original, but still enough to kick ass. It just seems a bit hard to implement.

And I'm thinking about a Mystic Warrior.
He's melee but spell-oriented, mostly offensive spells and few supportive. Let his supportive be like a positive AoE effect that gives nearby allies a powerful bonus that lasts for a short moment. Since he has no way of healing, he has to rely on his teammates, potions, healing stuff, etc. to keep him alive. But let one of his melee skills steal life (Active; not passive) from enemies.

I propose that it be a called a Runesmith or something.

A Caster Spec that specialises in Fire based magic and conjuring weapons

A Melee Spec that specialises in forging constructs and has spells that affix to ally/enemy armour/weapons.

A Conjurer class sounds good.
You should gives him some ranged instant cast arcane spells or buffs that upgrades the group's weapons and armors.
