Warcraft III Previewer

This is the Warcraft III Reforged model previewer program from the Reforged build pipeline, so it can preview all their models perfectly, preview PKB emitters perfectly, and report any errors in a model when you "File > Open" that model if the model has some kind of problem. It is written in C++ and Dear ImGui so it runs better, faster, and easier than Retera Model Studio.

To run this program, put it into your x86_64 folder of Reforged (usually _retail_/x86_64/ in the game install) as in the following screenshot:

Then, right click on Preview.exe and use Run as Administrator.

As the author of Retera Model Studio a part of me wants to be frustrated that this was never previously published and that we wasted time on the outside inventing something similar, but we may as well celebrate the good things instead of upsetting ourselves over the bad. It's not really in a company's best interest to support modding, probably, anyway.

Very solid viewer.

Above are some media videos featuring this program. It includes Archive Viewer to select models from inside the game.

But you can also use File > Open to select a custom model from your computer.

I can't seem to figure out how to get this File > Open menu to locate the needed textures for a custom model. Maybe this is because for the internal developers, there are no custom models. I think that reaches the end of my attention span for helping with this program. Maybe it will help somebody else.

It can load custom textures from the _retail folder.

Yup just found this as well.

For everyday users looking to load their custom models into the previewer.

Look at the existing paths of the textures in mdlvis/reteras model studio. Recreate the same texture folder path structure in your Warcraft III\_retail_ folder. If all the textures have no folder mapping just place the texture files in _retail_. For a lot of people who map their textures to war3mapimported this means make a folder called war3mapimported in your _retail_ folder and throw the textures in there.

Yes. Per the tool description, you need to Run as Administrator in order for it to launch, for some reason. I haven't quite figured out exactly why yet.

I announce preview.exe to be the harbinger of a new age of Warcraft 3 Reforged modding.
This is like WC3Viewer but also works on Reforged HD models, and it displays PopcornFX flawlessly.
We won't have to run World Editor and import the model into a map to see what it really looks like anymore.

Yes, that's the same error message I got doing Run As Administrator as well. :<
Figured it out, see below

Also make sure placed it in the right folder, it's NOT where the launcher.exe is.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Warcraft III\retail\x86_64, right?
lololol, I'm a dummy. I had them in the right place... but in their own folder inside that folder. They have to be 'right next' to the actual game files, duh.

It works now; thanks

Well this thing is pretty nifty! I spent way too long looking through menus to try & find a way to modify the controls; they swapped the X/Y on me and the zoom is all weird, lol. Also I don't know why I thought this would be able to modify models; it's literally called "Previewer.exe". (So don't fret @Retera , RMS is still quite invaluable, even if this is a superior Preview functionality).

Very cool piece of tech. A bit more clunky (with the 'not loading custom textures without extra work') thing, but having such a powerful tool that can describe the errors & play the fancy SFX is very nice.
