Pathing is a very complicated and messy thing in WCIII, there's no known way to view what exactly is done, and only few have succeeded in altering it (even if slightly). If you have a certain problem concerning pathing, I suggest you post it here, I myself and I bet many others have had problems with pathing in the past, perhaps we can help out.
Well, in fact, the WC3 pathfind is the simpliest in the world ^^'
(i've seen its description in a programming mag)
when you order a unit to move to a point, the pathfind look all "tile-to-tile" possible way (manage all other units as simple obstacles), and choose the shortest one (if the unit is blocked somewhere during its move, by an other unit wich has moved since the pathfind work, the pathfind recalculate a new path)
