Using 2 displays, problem

Using a laptop with 1600 native resolution connected to 1080 tv via HDMI cable. Works fine except the TV display turns off unless laptop is closed - cant type! How do you fix this?

Normally laptops have the "F" key somewhere around the ctrl and alt buttons.

With it and one of the "F1-12" keys you can normally change the output of the laptop.
