Use icon instead of floting text

It is pretty advanced, but here is a method that might work:
  • Create a square, flat plane model with the texture you'd like. See this for an example. You can make it so that one animation corresponds to the particular icon you want to use.
  • Make it a billboarded model. I think Magos' Model Editor has some options for this.
  • Create a unit with that model, set the animation appropriately, and then make it move with the floating text.

Obviously there is a lot to do to carry out those steps, but that should give you a rough idea of what it would take.

Your idea is quite nice. However, I wonder how you can move the model with the floating text. That is the purpose of my question. For instance, I would like the model to be next to the floating next. However, if I put my camera in a certain way it would be out of focus and the text and the model could smash into one another, which is quite anoying.
