Upgrade Tech for hero (adding attack range)

Before reforged all I had to do was to give a hero tech upgrade and teach that upgrade, the hero would get the upgrade like any other unit. I am trying to teach my hero rifleman's range upgrade like I used to do before reforged.
But here is the tricky part: since reforged this methode doesn't work?

acquisition range needs to be higher than or equal to current range + upgrade

I actually solved it but it requires a lot of loopholes, you must use either damage upgrade or defense upgrade with 0 value.
