How can I make units stop thinking by themselves and make them do nothing until told to? They keep attacking closest enemies, I don't want that.

Set acquisition range to 1 in object editor or try adding peon classification with a trigger.

That's a bad idea, pausing units will also pause the duration of the buffs.

That is as far as I know it pauses buffs only if trigering unit is paused. I you are right (i think you are not), then you have just ruined my day

Nope, you're wrong. It do pauses buffs as well even if triggering unit is not paused.
