Is there a way to change command buttons once the game has started depending on the race of a player?

There is actually i way of doing this but it requires JASS/vJASS heres the link to an example of skin switching which is basically what you would have to use to switch the buttons:

Command buttons as in Move, Attack, Patrol, etc.?

I believe they have only one icon set which is being used by all races. Correct me if am wrong.
However if iam not mistaking I believe I have seen Beta icons or just names, not sure, regarding those command buttons.
What you can do is search the mpq for the races under replaceable textures and see if you can find anything.

Hm that method requires a slot to be reserved, is there another?

It's impossible to change the icons themselves. What the first suggested tutorial did was change the unit's models. Technically, it would be possible. But it would get way too complicated, and probably not be worth it.
