Personaly, i would mine all the stone i could get my hands on, trade it all for sticks, use sticks to make stone pickaxe, mine some more and profit from occasionaly finding ore/mob drops

also how where the players contained inside anyways? Couldnt they climb out? Or cna the admin put blocks above the normal height limit ?

Not really. They just followed the rules. Plus considering limited resources building and removing cobblestone towers would be a nightmare and the chances of you not being seen and reported were close to zero.
Still, having mastered SkyBlock, this situation does not scare me.

Its way better to build a stairway accross the wall rather then a one way tower, also they could have made a seccond portal in the nether and escape to the outside world from where they would smuggle goods, did i mention this really reminds me of s.t.a.l.k.e.r?

Also is skyblock good? All i've heard about it was that its a small zone with few resources high above ground, correct?

Make me.

I agree with Trol, how come there is an F but not an Ф? That said, I'm whipping out my... list of Latin proverbs:

Agere sequitur credere - We act according to what we believe
Auctoritas non veritas facit legem - Authority, not truth, makes law
Auribus teneo lupum - I hold a wolf by the ears
Aut vincere aut mori - Either to conquer or to die
Absolutum dominium - you know what it means
Imperium sine fine - an empire without an end
