So then what are the points of having like 6 difforent ones? some look the same

Since I don't know which icon you're looking at I can't say for sure but all icons I have found on hive don't use identical icons only similar looking ones and they're used for different sort of abilities. For instance you have one for passive abilities, one for upgrades and one that's used when the ability is on coldown.

So is it impossible to have one for normal spell, one for when its on cooldown, and one for upgrades? Because there is only the catagories Normal, Research and Turn Off :l

No you're able to have one for every scenario if you wish simply by adding the right looking icon to the spell, upgrade or unit desired by changing the Art - Icon - Game Interface in the object editor.

For as many active and passive icons you have, you have to have same amount of their disabled counterparts.

Take for example the icon of the Critical Strike ability.
This one uses active version BTNCriticalStrike for when you want to learn it or skill up as a hero, and PASBTNCriticalStrike for the learned version.

Now you use 2 icons and each needs its disabled counterpart.
So the active version, used for when you want to level up your spell, uses DISBTNCriticalStriker and the passive version (PASBNTCriticalStrike) uses DISPASBNTCriticalStrike.

So in total, the critical strike uses 4 icons -> 1 "active" version, 1 "passive" version and 1 disabled icon for the passive icon and 1 disabled version of the active icon.
