Simple Texture Question

I've always been curious about how exactly models are wrapped and textures are applied so I've been playing around with this model I have.

The model uses this texture:

And I completely painted the texture blue like this:

StormCrow.jpg

My question is, shouldn't that make the model all one shade of blue? Instead it comes out like this:

Clipboard01.jpg

Can anybody explain to me why? What's up with the darker areas, and why does it cut off so abruptly between the two shades? ^-^

The shadows are made by the model (might be a normal map), and not by the texture you're creating. You might have more luck asking in the modelling section.
