Rock Golem Variations (WoW style, Siege Mode)

WoW-style Earth Elemental

This is the model seen in the cover image, inspired by a request from @Lefroit .

It doesn't transform.
It has a new unique death animation, you can use the old death animation by changing the name of the sequence OLDDeath
The movement speeds and damage points are the same as the normal rock golem.

Siege-Mode Golems

These are similar to the normal rock golem, but I changed the leg rocks so they can transform into Siege-Mode (become stationary).

The transformation takes 2 seconds, each way.
The speeds and damage points are otherwise the same as a normal rock golem.

There are two colour schemes: Grey like the classic golem, orange like the wow-style Earth Elemental.
The models labelled OLD use the siege-mode I originally made, in case people wanted those.

How do I give my golem siege-mode?
  • Make a new transformation spell based on Bear Form
  • Change Stats - Duration - Normal to 2
  • Make a new unit to transform into
  • Make the new unit use animations labelled Alternate and give it 0 movement speed
  • Give the new unit bigger damage and range, if you want
I suggest not using these units as towers, like Ancient Protectors. They aren't designed for it.

11/9/24
  • Added WoW style / Earth Elemental golem
  • Added replacement Siege-mode
    • Fewer sound effects
    • No magic effects between anchor rocks and Golem's body
    • more movement in anchor rocks
    • the model now works like a turret: it will face its target even with 0 movement speed, or if it is a tower/building

I really like this animation, my only real concern is the birth animation doesn't lend itself to birthing in its alternate form. I think it looks really cool though :D
I didn't think about that. I'm using it as like a bearform morph, but if someone used it as an ancient protector replacement, it would look weird.

ED: Except the top half wouldn't turn if you did that anyway.. And the trick for keeping the bottom stationary would be pointless.
Maybe using it as a tower needs more thought .

It works fine as a siege tank type thing though.

Cool, is this inspired with wow's earth elementals? Death anim somewhat reminded me of them. Also, I know it's supposed to be stationary, but I kinda wish "walk alternate" would have him cycle his rock legs just like in wow.
Yeah, somewhat. The death animation definitely was :p
I was thinking about those cycling feet too. I don't know if you could have the same stand animation then, though. I can't remember if the feet rotate independent of the body, or they reorient when the upper body turns. The main goal of this model was to make the feet independent.
Maybe you could have a geoset that is legs, a geoset that is rotating rocks (with a global sequence, independent or not) and another geoset with rock feet that cycle. Thats where the problem is, swapping between those last 2.

ed: It doesn't look like they rotate independent of the body, and he only has 1 Stand animation so it doesn't break the orbit of the rock feet.
I can't get enough of siege tank stuff & elementals. Nice work!

I do wish you had kept the big legs; honestly I think the base being bigger/more closely connected to the golem would look better anyway. 🤔
I get it, originally I nearly scrapped it because the legs looked weird. But maybe because I was staring at these for so long, the normal legs look weird to me now, and these look normal. They remind me of the boston dynamics robots... which is kind of nightmare fuel.

The problem is I really don't think the illusion would work with the normal legs. The components need to be similar size for the "jump cut" when the geosets swap over. I like that the anchors on the ground are regular, too.
It might be possible to have like 4 rocks become anchors, and 2 rocks orbit around the lightning ball. Would that be an improvement do you think?

Another idea was for the big legs to break up into smaller pieces before the transformation. This was just a lot less work than that 😅 lol

I want to make a tier 3 golem that turns into a trebuchet (called an Atlas), but that stationary morph is the hurdle.

Here's the converted WoW model so you can see how exactly his rocks are moving, if you want.

I might try first, then cheat later if it's tough.

----

I'm going to come back to this model later, and add some things:

  • A version that works properly as a tower ( Root/Uproot, with turning turret)
    • It's a bit of a cock tease to upload this model and it doesn't even work as a Ancient Protector replacement
  • A version with WoW style walking (lefroit)
  • A version with more WoW style colour scheme (and with WoW walking option)
  • Better geode crystals, assuming people don't complain.
  • I'll change the sound effects if people have better ideas, mainly the swoosh sound during morph.

If you have suggestions or want something added, please let me know now before I start adding things again.

I have a growing to-do list, and it might be a while until I can fit this in after that.

It seems like if you fix it to turn like an Ancient Protector tower, this will work for models that aren't buildings or towers, which kind of defeats the point of the Billboardzlock tag.
Create a new spell based on Bear Form, give the Bear Form unit 0 movement and a ranged attack, and you will get siege mode.

My old golem unit used a trick to stop the model moving, but it still technically had movement speed.

The difference:

  • 0 movement means the unit will snap to face its original direction when it stops attacking. It won't attack things outside its range, and you can't order it to move.
  • Stopping the unit from moving means its direction wont snap back, but it will still take movement orders and orders to attack things outside its range. This is bad because it will get 'locked' into those orders that it can't complete, and for example wont auto-attack enemies until you cancel the buggy orders.

So ultimately, 0 movement speed is better even if it looks weird.

I have legit been waiting for a "golem to earth elemental" model for literally years and this is both an improved golem with team color and that replacer! I have been using the first model as a replacement for the Dalaran golems while the earth elemental as a replacement for the golem creeps. Kind of a big ask, but would it be possible to have mud/stone/granite versions as well, even if just as a different skin?

Either way an easy 5/5 for me!

Honestly, it might be too big an ask :p. I'm getting kind of tired of these models and it's getting in the way of finishing some other stuff.

atm I'm working on updating the siege mode ones (almost finished that) but I'm still figuring out a tower version.

the plan is for 4 different variations:

  1. Standard grey golem that roots like Ancient Protector*
  2. Orange WoW style golem (what's uploaded now, but I noticed some tiny bugs)
  3. Grey golem with siege mode (i.e. at-will morph which makes it stationary), but I'm probably going to make the stationary version look more WoW style.
  4. Orange golem with siege mode, as above.
The biggest fun killer is having all these slightly different variations and needing to forward changes between them, especially when the keyframes are slightly offset because of quirks in the software :(
It's beyond tedious.

*I decided I couldn't be bothered doing this, sorry everyone!
