At the request of our benefactor @Ralle .

Let's scrutinise the Tag system and try and make it better:
NOTE: I'll be addressing the following tags mainly.

List of the tags:

  • Decorations
  • Plants
  • Rocks
  • Structures
  • Trees
  • Water
  • Alien Futuristic
  • Anime
  • Blizzard
  • Cartoon
  • Diablo
  • Dinosaur/Prehistoric
  • Medieval
  • Modern Warfare
  • Space
  • StarCraft
  • World of Warcraft

What's the Issue?
It's starting to become a lot harder to find specific resources due to people not being aware how to tag things properly and moderators not keeping track of the tags (i.e. Orc warrior being tagged as Human only). Another thing is that currently a lot of the tags are very vague (Medieval) and too similar (Space/Alien Futuristic) so people, and moderators included don't know which ones to tag it with.
Another thing is tag spamming, where users will put a lot of tags on their resources that often don't describe it better just so it will show in a lot more searches.

Solution
Clearly defined tags and also training of Moderators to properly tag resources at the same time they approve them. This really requires us all to discuss the tags and give them a description. (then moderators can print this on their fridge for easy access)

My Suggestions:
Similar Tags:
Doodads -
Merge Plants with Trees , and Rocks with Decorations

Genres - Merge the following - Alien Futuristic/Space

- Define clearly the following tags: Starcraft, World of Warcraft, Blizzard, Cartoon, Diablo, Medieval

Medieval
Gets slapped on literally everything, Ralle suggested that we just remove however I think it simply has to be redefined.
There are a lot of Medieval Realistic themed maps and those map need resources, so we should simply define it as Realistic Medieval Units

Basically let's separate the Medieval Human from the Fantasy world, i.e. a Gnoll with A Crossbow is not medieval, it is fantasy. I'd draw the line to anything that couldn't be used in a generic medieval world (no elves and magical beasts).

This thread is meant to start the discussion, let's fix tags for everyone's sake!

I'd like to add that searching for missile models right now is quite cumbersome. You enable the Missile tag and the pages are almost exclusively filled with unit models that happen to have a missile packaged with them, which you can't see until you click on the model, click on View in 3D, and then select the missile. The Army model packs that are currently on the front page have the Missile tag, but, as far as I can tell, have no missile models included in the pack.

I think it would make more sense to have the missile model as a separate resource and then link back and forth between the two resources.
