What if a Map has more than 2 Genres?

Well, what genre can I use in uploading maps when my maps actually have 2 or more genres associated with them..

I always make maps that have 2 or more genres associated with them, like my Castle Wars Professionals which combines Hero Defense, Mini-Game and Melee.

What genre then Im going to use when I upload a multi-genre map??

Or can you add to the Maps Rules the Hybrid type, where users can just type "Hybrid", a colon :)), then the genres associated with that map... That'd be great!!

Model search system

It finds the new stuff just find but IGNORES ALOT of the old things it also seems to be case sensitive, this system should be changed ! i cant find anything with it !

Also we should be able to view all models in a paticular section like we could back at Wc3 sear.ch would help ALOT ! thanks.

For Ralle: it would be nice to have a choice between boolean and natural mode. Natural would be the default.

yess i liked how you could browse each catagory without needing to use any "searches" just by clicking on the category you could see what you wanted.

Catagories in the Resources Sections.

What ever happened to them? I know there were about a million different sections, but they were quite gnarly. For those that don't know what I'm talking about, back on Wc3Sear.ch in the Skins/Models sections there were various groups you could use to refine your searches...like "Starcraft," "Blood Elves," "Naga," and so on, and so forth. They were quite nice.

Something to consider putting back in, unless it's tough to do.

Ralle is currently working his webmaster's fingers to the bone to further develop the resource section categories to make them more powerful and useful. The new system will include:
  1. Main categories: The categories will be defined by Ralle and only the existing categories (or those he approves in the future) will be used.

  2. Genres: Category-specific genres will include keywords which all resource submitters may define and submit. Examples:
    • Icons > Buildings > Space Orcs
    • Maps > Role Playing Game / RPG > Imagica
    • Models > Units > Badass

  3. Categories and genres alike will be searchable.

Battleships (or other non-standard map types) will not be included in the approved categories as many, many such categories would develop, each containing very few maps (or perhaps only a single one).

At present the approved categories are:
  • Aeon of Strife / AoS
  • Altered Melee
  • Arena
  • Campaign
  • Capture the Flag / CTF
  • Cinematic
  • Defense / Survival Escape / Maze
  • Footmen Wars / Footmen Frenzy
  • Hero Arena
  • Life of a Peasant / LOAP
  • Melee
  • Mini-Game
  • Miscellaneous / Other
  • Offense Role Playing Game / RPG
  • Shooting / FPS
  • Spells & Systems
  • Strategy / Risk
  • Template / Terrain
  • Tower (Defense / TD / Maul / Wars)
Some minor adjustments still need to be made, however, they are likely to be in the downward direction: for example, when the list was originally created the Spell section did not exist. The addition of any new categories is very unlikely.

Model resources will be first to receive the genres in addition to the existing category labels. I'm not sure if he will work on maps next, although I hope he does.

Battleships would be a fine example of a genre (sub-category).

I think it would be the only sub genre with 85+ ( list is uncomplete ) map makers :D

That a lot of Battleships maps! It will be up to Ralle to decide whether or not such a category is desirable, although it may be redundant. It's possible that most of those maps may be more properly categorized under one of the existing labels: his call.

At any rate, since our recent discussion has related to strictly to categories, genres and labels, it's probably best to move some posts to Ralle's category thread.

Popularity

Okay, this site is the only site that I have found that you can get Warcraft 3 models from and is totally free of viruses and popups. Actually, this is the only website that I have found that you can get Warcraft 3 models from. But despite this, for some reason this site is not as popular as would be expected. I think I will always wonder about this. I think y'all should get more map files though, and definitely fix the search function for the models. I was trying to find a model for a car and the one that I finally found was called Vette. Think about this- someone searches "car," and they wouldn't find anything because the file is named Vette. Even if someone got so specific as to search "Corvette," the file still wouldn't turn up because the name, again, is Vette. I suggest that y'all add keywords to the searches so that things can be more easily found. Increased accessibility and ease of use= more popular.

We don't need any more maps. Seriously.
Pending maps come in faster than all of the moderators can approve them.
What we need are more quality maps, but that's up to the you, the user.
If you want to see more quality maps here, make them for us! We'd be glad to get them on here.
And as for the search thing, I believe it searches the description.. But I agree, it should also search name and author. For now, what people can do is upload their model with the name of the model and the author, as well as any keywords they want it to be searched under.
--donut3.5--

ATM, the Search system (well, EVERY SINGLE Search System) uses search tags for detailed search, so the original author didn't supply the tags such as Corvette, Car etc etc. because most of the models came from wc3s, and while they were in transfer, Ralle and the others just didn't have time to add tags to those models.

Well, they should task people with doing that, help clean up the tags for search.... Also, in my example, searching for the name wouldn't help because the name was just "Vette". Searching "Car" for name wouldn't help.

Thanks for your kind words, HumanSlayerV, and for your input as well.

When our intrepid webmaster (Ralle) implements the new resource section scripts (hopefully within a couple of weeks or so) searches will be far more powerful as they will be based upon not only the present "categories" but also upon user-created "keywords" as well.

When he implements those scripts, we resource moderators will have our work cut out for us as we will have to carefully ensure that each specific resource is properly categorized and tagged. We'll try to do our best.

Resource Categories & Genres references this subject.

Indeed they will be.

As each user submits their resource they will be able to include whatever keywords (Genres) they desire to describe their creations. The global tags (Categories) shall remain as-is: Moderator/Administrator created & approved. Both will, of course, be fully search-able.

Actually wc3c is far more popular than hive due to it's relations with other sites and its members and its hosting of PR which has been seen and talked of in PC power play or such.
www.Wc3campaigns.net has models aswell. There are alot of other smaller sites and areas but nothing worth jumping about. Alot of korean sites also have wc3 models, and xgm has alot but they are dirty and steal models and host horrible rips.

Well, from a pure traffic ranking standpoint, it looks like Hive is already doing pretty well.

As far as I've seen, one of the hardest things to accomplish with a search system is how to order the results in a relevant fashion.

I think this is one of the biggest issues with the current system, because when you search, the keywords you type are matched against not only the title of the resource, but also the author, and description, etc...

So for example, if you search for something that shows up in a map description a lot, you might see that map on the list, even if the map title has nothing to do with the keywords you searched.

Using user-entered keywords may help this somewhat, but then you still have a similar problem: how do you order the results? You might have 100 maps that have the same keyword, so which map of the 100 would be shown at the top of the list when someone's search included the keyword?
