How do I do it?
Editing one of the .mpq files, of course, but which one?
I've tried to edit one of them, but now I cannot start World Editor, because it says there's something wrong. Can't remember the exact message, but I can find out, if necessary.
Also, if I wanted to, let's say, import a new model that doesn't replace any other model, but force a Footman to use my newly imported model, but not overwriting the original model. That should be possible, right?
And I have backed the original .mpq's up, in case of a problem.

You want your footman to use a model you downloaded?! Or you want to make your own model? Read modelling tutorials then.

You don't have to replace main MPQs models with yours to make them work. You can simply import them into your map. But if you don't want to override anything, then keep in mind that you are free to type anything in an imported model's path.

Use Object Editor to change a unit's model.

Yes, I want the footman model replaced. Or a new model imported that replaces no other.
But I want it to be active in every map, not just one specified map.
I know how to use the Object Editor, and it isn't in there that my problem lies.

I don't know. I guess I don't want that.
But there must be some way!
I mean, what does all TC's do? They replace models, right? Somehow they do.
Yes, they come with their own .mpq and launcher, but if I wanted to do something like that, how would I? I've searched several times, Google and many forums, but I haven't found an answer.
Does you know how to create a new .mpq and .exe that utilizes the new .mpq instead of the original war3.mpq?

So, it is illegal?
Then I won't try to find out how to do it then.
But it just seems strange that TC's, which modifies a game extensively, are allowed then. As far as I know, Project Revolution is/was allowed to do just that by Blizzard. Or, at least, they weren't told to stop because of modifying Warcrafts application/s. Neither was TToR, if I remember correctly. They were allowed to thrive, and be downloaded.

That I can understand. Modified .mpq = Ban from Battle.net. Simple and good rule.
But I don't want to play over Battle.net. I rarely have time to play at all. And certainly not online. When I play games, their mostly single-player based, like TESIV: Oblivion.
But if I wanted to modify my .mpq, it is possible, right? As long as I don't try to play with it on Battle.net, and keep it basically to myself, it would be "legal", in a sense, right?

I already have Ladik's MPQ Editor, but I don't know how to get it to change unit models in all maps. I've tried messing with the .slk files, changing model paths, but still nothing happens.
Does you know how to do that with WinMPQ?
Since it should only be to import my model, change a few values in the .slk files, then it should be simple. But it isn't, apparently, because I can't get it to work. It is as if the game, or the .mpq, doesn't read my changes. But when I look in the modified .mpq, then the .slk I changed is the one lying there, not the original.
Then why won't it work?

Groggy Golem wants play melee games with other models. First of all, set your thread's tag to Unsolved. So when someone searches the word "unsolved", he finds your thread.

1) Download a model;
2) Import the model and it's skins into your map. Also read this;
3) Restart your WE to see your model. You can simply load your map again instead. You may skip this step;
4) Open your map with MPQ, grab the model and its skin, and move them into your main MPQ;
5) Tell me what happens then, and I'll continue;

1) Easy enough.
2) Done.
3) Done.
4) Done that.
5) Is something supposed to happen? Like the program crashes, etc?
If so, nothing has happened.
The model exists within the MPQ now, but does not show up in the preset model list. I guess there is a reason for that, since it did not come with the game, but it would be nice to have it there. However, if I change the Footmans model (in the editor, not replacing it) and type the name in the 'custom'-part of the Art - Model file, then it shows up.
Please, continue.
