Something that popped into my head nary a day ago. Although I do applaud the Hive's stance on purely freehanded icons, except for an elite (and highly prolific...) minority, most icons are, to be honest, fairly useless. Although I'm sure some lovely person'll be sure to link me to 2105 pages of highly relevant and versatile icons.

I believe that an additional icon section is in order, wherein recoloured icons with correct borders and whatnot can be uploaded. The uploader's name etc will be replaced by 'Anonymous' or 'Blizzard Entertainment'.

The reason for this? I can think of maybe three artists on the forum off the top of my head who can create icons that genuinely fit with the Warcraft 3 U. Unless users are going to use a completely custom UI, there are usually blaring inconsistencies between icon to icon.

I'm aware that many people hate recolours, mineself occasionally included, and like to scream 'BLARGH LEARNETH TO RECOLOUR YER OWN ICONS NUB.' However, it's a pitiful fact that some people really simply don't have the time or ... intelligence to download a small program and spend ~30 seconds adjusting hues. And there appear to be quite a few people who enjoy recolouring ._.

Ike Ike, most icons are made by users for themselves, requests or competitions. There are lots of people who also enjoy making icons, but still. Once you made a spell/upgrade/Whatever and WC3 doesn't have have a fitting icon, you'll be happy too look there. Also HINT: Searching makes it unneccesary to look trough all pages

Some of my recolors (rejected or not uploaded):

A pretty useful idea, especially since i regulary see more requests for recolours than for completely new icons.
I won't let recolours defile the Icon Section, but your idea is a good and surprising one.
But a completely new section is hilarious and unnecessary.
Maybe there's a way to sort such kind of icons out, making them only visible if you click on a specific button. They should neither be visible on the front page (newest approved icon) nor of low recoloured quality, as far as you may call something recoloured "qualitative".

Let's keep this hypothetic:
Joe-black-5s examples may be acceptable in that part of the section, the first and second from shamanyouranus as well since they are definitely something new.

But keeping in mind that i don't want the current section "defiled" and a completely new section might be too much work and attention, i see currently no way for this idea.

Any suggestions?

There really should be a art tutorial ''The blizzard feeling''. Also the section could serve for any improvemnt/modification of WC3 icons, with the rule; This section is for any blizzard icon edit that does not meet 50% freehand but has decent quality

Model icons are actually useful, as it's almost guaranteed they'll be used. Most people can screenshot well too :/

Perhaps 'Recolour' can become a new icon category? And if you select 'Recolour' as a category while uploading, the uploader's name is automatically changed and a 'Recolour' search tag added to the icon? 'though the name change might be a bit extreme.

If we allow a sub-section for recolours, i like the idea of a thread in the forums for that, and a link from the icon section to the specified thread.
  • The first post will contain the 'approved' recolours.
  • The thread will be constantly updated.
  • Any offtopic post in that thread should not be tolerated.
  • Every submission in that thread contains a .zip or .rar file with the icons.
  • Every submission has to include attached images of the icon (all versions).
  • The thread aims only to the manipulation of exisiting Icons from Warcraft III.
  • No CnP allowed.
  • No Filters allowed.
  • No rotation or mirroring.
  • The product's quality should be acceptable.
  • Every recolour should have more or other uses than the original version.
  • Simple edits won't be approved.
  • The posts from approved submissions won't be deleted.
  • The posts with rejected submissions will be deleted.
  • All general site rules apply. This includes prohibitions against any offensive or pornographic art.
  • Stealing will be heavily punished.
  • Icons must always include both active (with Blizzard border!) and disabled version.
