[Altered Melee] Race Design

Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask what everyone thinks about melee maps that feature a race that uses Red Orc models while the standard Green Orc race remains a playable race.

I have this one map, which is a legion invasion themed reskin of turtle rock and I was considering replacing the human race with a "Illidari" themed races that uses red orcs for front line fighters, blood elves for ranged units and naga for siege units. This race is meant to replace the Humans in this map.

The reason for this is that I want to change my basic re-skin of turtle rock into a map based around the notion that Illidan killed Arthas and coherced Kaél into being the new Lich King so that he does not give Kil'Jaden a means to destroy Azeroth/remnants of the blood elf race.

The basic lay out for this Illidari themed race is as follows (resource costs have not been determined at this time)A ghimick for this race is the fact that they will not have flyers. This is because the Naga advanced units will be able to attack any player from any angle due to the fact that the game takes place on an island, giving Dragon Turtles, Naga Myrmidons Snap Dragons and based casters the ability to evade the enemy army in the water and execute a surgical attack on the enemy base,when convenient.

Minion - basic builder

Brutes - Fel Orc Grunt skin from editor. This unit has a researchable skill which increases movement and attack speed at the cost of taking increased damage. Will not have the Pillage skill.

Far Strider - Blood Elf archer, same stats as rifle man

Marauder - fel orc raider skin from editor, reskin of Human Knights

Dragon Turtle - tier 2 siege unit, can research devour, capable of swiming.

Priests, Sorcs and Spell Breakers remain the same

Naga Legionnaire - tier 2 unit, uses naga myrmidon skin, can learn Ensnare at tier 2 and fog cloud at tier 3

Naga Summoner - tier 2 unit, can learn Parasite,Summon Sea Elemental, Immolate and Ethereal Form, uses Naga Summoner Model

Naga Handmaiden - can learn Frost Armour, Aerial Shackless (was previously Chain Dispel in original draft posted here), Cyclone

Snap Dragon - tier 3 unit, will deal 29-45 damage and have an extra 10 hp over it's base form.

Or the T3 unit could have a transportation ability to allow BE units to accompany the naga.

Maybe give the Spell Breaker a different ability as it's redundant with Chain Dispel.

Giving them Summon Sea Elemental might be overpowered, I've seen similar naga-themed maps where amphibious casters summon as many of those as they can to steamroll undefended areas and remain near-untouchable.

Is there a unit with high Magic damage?

Is the minion amphibious?

Hi,

For a T3 unit that transports, I am thinking of making use the caravan unit from the escort mission in Maiev's campaign, to help transport foot based units with nagas. Many thanks for the inspiration.

I just need to figure out how to make it walk on water.

On the toppic of casters:

At first, I wanted to alter Spell Breaker's Spell Steal ability to target only enemies, specializing them in stealing buffs, however I just woke up to the fact that Priests have AoE dispell. I am now doubting the need of having 3 different casters with the ability to cleanse in some way....I might drop Chain Dispell all toghether in favour of something else.....Maybe Aerial Shackles?

Set its movement type to Amphibious. There's also a model of a sea turtle with a howdah on its back somewhere.

Aerial Shackles might be good if they're otherwise lacking in anti-air. Although it's more a BE spell.

Will naga buildings be placeable in water?


What are the heroes like?

Naga buildings will not be place-able on water,as the Illidari builder is not an amphibious creature.
I haven't started working on heroes yet, however I am now commited to Aeriall Shackles on the Handmaiden as the only ranged unit listed in my draft that will be available in the mid game is the blood elf archer.

I haven't finished work on the heroes yet.

Also what does BE mean?

The map is not going to be a full on campaign, just an Altered Melee map, so this part of the story won't matter, however, if I'd have to take a guess, I'd argue sacrificing one of their own to keep a horde of ravenous undead from beign completly subjucated by demons is a plus, especially when you get all those walking corpses to move their husks out of Quel'Thalas. However pesimists remain in the ranks of the BE.

Summoners were supposed to be ranged casters,who when it etheral mode(where they can't attack) they would body block with immolation, serving as meat shields that can only be damaged by other spell casters.

This plan fell through the roof now,as I realized there is no etheral model for summoner naga,so I need to redesign the naga side of this race.
