offsetting attachment/special effect ON unit

i'm wondering if it is possible to offset an attachment/special effect placed on a unit. like placing a fireball on the sides of a unit's head.

and no, i'm not talking about offsetting it through a point, but offsetting it ON the unit, as offsetting it through a point only places it on that point, and will not move with the unit.

if possible, how?

that was what i thought at first - creating a dummy, but then i thought it might look weird for a split second if the unit turns or suddenly changes location.
and 0% modelling skill here. :p

i guess i'll try the dummy unit thing anyway. :]

That is the only way without model editions. Once you have the proper position of the unit, it shouldn't be hard. Just run a timer to constantly update it to that offset. As long as you use a decent frequency for the timer interval (about ~0.035 or so) it should look pretty good. You might be surprised. =P
