New modeller needing some hive help

I've made some maps before that contained others units. Now I decided to try make some myself. BUT I'm not really sure how to do. I've heard about modelling programs, But I've also heard that most of 'em is very(!) expensive. So my question is: Is there a free or not-expensive modelling program
