I've decided to try modeling. But ive never done this before and im not even sure if i have the right program or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This would help you a lot. It contains all the useful tutorials about Modelling and maybe texturing also.

I am also using the tutorials from there for my model

i had started with Milkshape, but that was only coz a friend gave me his old version for free (the guy got a new one, long ago). Milkshape's major drawback is the cost, but otherwise i think it's way better to use rather than most other programs. 3ds Max is pretty impractical for the beginner and the freeones weren't that easy for me either. After i tried out Milkshape, i just thought ''this is it! This is going to be my modelling program''. It was very easy to learn, though it needs some practice until you manage to make good anims. For the beginning, i'd recommend you to try out the free trial version of Milkshape and geomerging (additionally, this is an equally good guide). Just read the 3D Modeling Tutorials  I'd recommend you to start from geomerging or making attachments. Making custom anims is quite a hassle for beginning with. :vw_sad:
