I like the idea of a single fucking chat room. Makes it easier, less of a clutter. The main page idea was good, but would fucking fail with some of the work Ralle does.
BTW, I believe linking to SITES THAT EXIST IN PLACES violates the rules. Just a heads up.

It'd use a lot of - not sure (is it bandwidth?) - as it would be refreshing the messages for... what 1000 people? At some times of the day. It's just impractical on such a large site. =/
(Not to mention if 1,000 people had easy access and all fancied a chat... you'd have to make sure it had rooms).
Good idea though, I can see your point of view ;)

I'm assuming Ralle doesn't want to fork out $2-$4k on a chat (yes that is how much "professional" standard VBulletin chats can go up to). =/
Not to mention, most "chat boxes" do use refresh. Chat rooms and boxes are completely different and since we already have a custom coded chat... No way would he pay for another? That's my thinking o_O

Not all types of chats are refresh

It's called sending an Ajax request. :p
Also, implementing IRC would be much better than using something hosted here (since it takes the load off the server)
Plenty of free hosts (not that any of them make you pay) around (freenode, mibbit, msgplus, etc). Register a channel with any of them, and then embed a client into the website (Note: freenode does not work with the Mibbit client. Just a heads up).

Still, IRC would be much better than what you've got now.

Each time the current chat refreshes, it sends and receives an Ajax request. Having as many people as there are in the server, that can put a minor load on the server.
Using IRC would allow those resources to be allocated for the forums, allowing them to (hopefully) become more responsive, and load faster.
