You use a third party MPQ editor to modify them. Modification of those files is not recommended as they are known as part of the game and modifying the game violates the online terms of use which may result in your liscence (CD KEY) being banned.

For custom music you should rather play the track using a separate music player application with WarCraft III music turned off (Ctrl+M ingame). There are no negative side effects to this as the sound drivers should blend both ingame sound (eg from combat) and the external music (from the music player) without any artifacts. This will however require additional resources, epsecially if you use an advanced compression format on the music but that is only a problem on dated computers (specificly single core as any multi core will give ample free power).

Yes, simple. Download a program called "Lamexp" and perform a method called "compression" to reduce the file size. The greater the compression, the smaller the size, and the lesser the quality of the song. You can compress a song by reducing it's "bit rate".

You can experiment with different "bit rates" to find a good balance between file size and quality. I managed to fit a 3 minute song in my map with a file size of 800KB. The song's quality was ok to listen to.

I suggest you google sound file compression if you need any further help.
