Modeling Contest 15
THEME POLL

A.K.A. THE 7 DAY ULTIMATUM

Hello and welcome to another Modeling competition. This Competition's theme is the topic of debate today. Be sure to vote above for one of the submitted theme. If you do not like any of the themes, then it is your own fault for not speaking up in HappyCockroach's thread I have made this poll for the public to decide what Modeling contest 15's theme should be, based upon the suggestions for themes given in HappyCockroach's thread.

To move things along at a decent pace, the poll will only be open for 7 DAYS... err... 1 WEEK EXACTLY
The poll will close on SEPTEMBER 5, 2009

You can only vote once, make sure its the one you want.

Below is a short description of the theme criteria.

Mythical Sea Creature
This includes, but is not limited to things such as Kraken, leviathan cthulu or sea serpent. Size doers not matter as much as creativity. Do not create a goldfish and expect to win anything.

Anthropomorphic Creatures
More commonly reffered to as "furies" by most of the known internet. Anthro. creatures are animals that are given physical human-characteristics. i.e thumbs, making them bipedal, (minotaur, centaur, etc)

Critters "gone bad"
This theme defines "critters" as any neutral-passive model in Warcraft 3. And "gone bad" refers to the critter either becoming"corrupt" or "evil" or changed in some manner.

Steampunk
Steampunk refers to mechanical creations, powered by steam in some way shape or form. The suffix "punk" refers to the fact that most of these creations have impossibly complex articulated joints that could not possibly be powered by steam, but supposedly are anyways.

Melee Unit Replacement
This theme refers to the melee unit's in the game Warcraft 3. You are to replace a "melee" unit with another melee unit of your own design. Melee units are defined as units that do not fire projectiles. i.e the footman, grunt, abomination, etc

Rebellion
Quite Frankly, im not quite sure if this is a serious theme idea. But if chosen you are expected to create a model pertaining to riots and revolts or "rebellions" in general. i.e. pitchfork, moltov cocktail, angry peasant..... really that's all i got

Colossus
Also known as the TITAN theme. This theme encompasses "large boss-type units" Anything that is very large, that has appropriate animations to accompany it's size. The models must be made as large as or larger than the ingame Ogre unit. (Without being scaled in the editor) And it's animations must suggest it's large size i.e punching the ground or a slow "heavy, lumbering" walk

Critters
Critters refers to any neutral-passive unit in Warcraft 3, most commonly woodland animals, that have no attack animations.

I voted for melee, but I also wouldn't mind Steampunk winning.
Critters and Rebellion seem kind of meh.
When I first saw Rebellion I thought of Star Wars. :D

This is the public poll... I sugested having a separate vote for modelers with a 50/50 split. i dont know what we'll end up doing, but i thought i would put up the public poll first..... In fact, i dont know how we will do the modeler's voting. It will have to be done through a third impartial party some how. because we dont want people to vote based off of other people's votes..... meh, maybe well just keep as a standard vote

D: sorry... >.> i feel stupid now... i just though "modeling contest 15".... September 15...

but ya, i guess it is too long, i will shorten it to conclude on SEPTEMBER 5th

..... crap i gotta ask hakeem to fix it again ('-_-)

EDIT: hakeem fixed it. YOU HAVE 7 DAYS THIS IS AN ULTIMATUM!
..... ultimatum... not old-tomato

thank you hakeem, we love you

If you dont have time, then just ask for an extension like we always do. duh.

And as for those complaining about detailing it. It doesnt have to be any more detailed than any other model. Stop making excuses. You could make a "jolly green giant" or paul bunyon model. or an elemental or a giant All-seeing eye. How and what you make your colossus determines the polycount/details/filesize, not the fact that it IS a colossus

For example, the "azure dragon" is 119kb where as the human "peasant" is 138kb

It depends on how much work you want to put into it.

Everybody and their mother could make a critter unit. But the POINT of these competitions is to have a CHALLENGE. for REAL competition. Dont be a wuss. If colossus wins, then colossus wins, fair and square

I already said it was going to be critters didn't I

well you could think of this as being for modeling contest #16 :3

We're not going to do collossus though any time soon. Despite "being awesome", those sorts of models take too much time and result in only a couple of entries.

That's stupid. I am sorry, but it is. I could make a colossus model or 3 in about 2 hours. A decent one as well. Also, detail is not an issue...Just because it is big doesn't mean that we have to put more polies. It isn't like we are going to put 20 of these units on WC3 at once...

Only 2 people want critters. Almost 20 want colossus. Geese, I can think of at least 5 people who would make a model.

Me, archy, pyramid, Mech man, GF, Ike ike, etc.

Just doesn't make sense to me. None the less, I am going to make a colossus model, with or without the compo. I am not joining something like "critters" either. You are probably going to end up with only 1 or 2 entries. Neither of which will be pro modelers.

Your choice I guess.

/me slaps Pyritie

no they don't. They're just bigger, the animations don't get tougher. People demand colossus and you're going to have to give it to them not to mention a grand total of two people want critters.

qft

shhhhh dont say that. i want an excuse to spam polys XD

Uhm, I didn't vote for colossus and I won't make it.

Critters in warcraft are very small, that's why it looks simple to make them. But critters are basically wildlife and it's not necessarily very simple if you try to make them.

Well. I am very sorry to hear that mechanical man. I would have liked to see you join the COLOSSUS modeling competition. But if Colossus wins, then colossus wins. end of story. Pyritie and willthealmighty had a good idea in making a

small "CHALLENGE" (less rep, less time, smaller comp) for making critters, for the 2 or 3 people who still want to actually make critters.

Well it looks like the voting is fairly unanimous ... unless we have a huge influx of votes in the next few days. Colossus is currently holding a good lead. We will see in the next few days by Sept 5th

It's pretty much established that colossus is what the majority of the people want. XD 22 votes? Out of 44? lol Colossus wins..

It just depends on wether or not Pyritie is willing to make it the theme...

Mini-Contest? Nice. So what theme will modeling compo 15 have? Assuming, that the mini contest will have the critters...

Mini contests will have themes like "Less than 128 triangles" and so on.

I don't want the next contest to be colossus because we just had a "big" contest. I'd rather have one that is easier because people are starting to go back to school and so if I go for colossus now it will probably be a failed contest with only like 3 entries or something. :/

Can you guys see who voted? I can't... How do we know that only modellers voted? Or how are we going to count only our votes?

I ask myself too Who are those 22 people?...
Looks like I'll never know :)
I don't like colossus theme and I didn't voted for it. But I'll join if the contest starts with that theme.

I also support the mini challenges with the poly limit.

Well besides the fact that some of those posts are going off topic. (we are discussing modeling contest 15 not this so called mini contest). I do not understand why everyone suddenly is saying "we want critters" Every modeling contest ive seen in the past has had a public poll for the contest theme. I realize that it would be better if the modelers who enter the contests voted for the theme. But i do not want anyone to be influenced by another person's vote. Hence, the poll must remain public and anonymous.

And for Christ's sake, No pyritie, we did not have a "LARGE ROBOT THEME" in the last contest. We had a MORPHING THEME. the submissions for that were
1 castle, 2 tanks, 1 ghostshadow, 1 spikymurloc and 1 building-spaceship.

ONLY my model could be considered a "colossus" So i swear to god Pyritie, happycockroach and whoever else out there keeps bitching about this.....

Either come out and say that you have a problem with my models or stop your bitching.

I am willing to accept that MC15 be put off for 2 or 3 weeks so you can have your critter-tastic minicontest for the busier (or lazier) or you modelers out there. But this Poll is legitimate and will end in 3 days.

On September the 5th of 2009 this poll will close. and whichever theme has the most votes will be the appointed theme of Modeling Contest 15. Which will commence upon the ending of your Mini-contest.

I believe that this is a very respectable mature compromise, one that will please everyone. There will be a mini contest so you can settle into the rythm of school again. And once you do, the REAL contest will begin. This will let you whiners finally have your critters, while keeping the respectability and challengeof the real modeling contests intact.

Well Colossus does not need alternate animations. In fact, as many people keep pointing out; it does not need to be complex. If a model is well done, then it needn't be a large filesize at all.

What im trying to say through all my (some would call it ranting) is that the reward of a contest should be directly proportional to the time and effort required by the theme.

And no I have not contradicted myself. Because the theme colossus merely means that there is a larger variation in time and effort you can put into it.

You CAN create a simplistic colossus. but in the end the better-looking and more well done colossus will win (sometimes this means more polies, but it always means more time and effort was put into it.)

HOWEVER you can only go SO FAR in creating a complex critter. No one is going to want to upload a 200kb critter in the F-ing map because the POINT of it BEING a critter is to place it as scenery. Critters are Glorified Doodads. however, someone would not mind putting a 200kb Colossus in their map, because it would obviously act as a BOSS unit. a large (epic) model that you want people to remember, something that looks good and stands out. Critters do not stand out, critters accentuate the scenery
