Mirroring Bones ?

don't use mirroring on Max 4 or 5, it scruws up big time after you start linking them together, if you still want proof, export it to a 3ds file, then reimport it and you'll see that the mirrored stuff is f***cked up

Use X Y and Z coordination by entering them manually if you want to place them exactly on the oposition of the Y axis
