Mathias Chronicles I - The Pursuit

mathiaslogo-png.351451

matbuttonhaul1-png.373325

A single-player campaign based on Savage Potato's classic series of the same name.
Set during the events of the Third War, the story follows the illegitimate son of King
Terenas and his desperate big to prove he is worthy of the crown. Will he succeed?

The campaign was remade from the ground up, featuring new models, sounds and
music using patch 1.27 as I presumed it was the most stable at the time. Countless
hours were spent updating every element in this near-forgotten classic. Enjoy!

- Changed Kel'Zarach's portrait and the model of Granthar the Ogre Lord.
- Tweaked Sorcerer's description on Fire Elemental.
- Firebolt spell no longer can attack friendly units.
- Added classic portrait to Skeletal Orc.
- Tweaked Condemn's spell description.
- In "Crossing the Waimak", removed excess Peons.
- In "Chain of Fools", tweaked opening dialogue, and the cemetery scene with Kel'Zarach and Kel'Thuzad.
- In "Stone Hammer, Ice Axe", removed 'ping' in dragon quest, also added abilities to Dougal.
- Had 'Cloud' researched by default in the level.
- In "Shadow of the Reaper", changed the main quest to 'Defeat Warchief Malakai'.
- Tweaked ending's cameras so they don't clip through certain doodads.
- Special thanks to tulee and waredcraft for suggestions and bug fixes.

- Updated campaign's HIVE profile page

- Increased number of enemies when enemy AI attacks
- Fixed missing doodads
- Fixed minor camera issues during cutscenes
- Other minor tweaks

- Released

matbuttonhaul4-png.373328

This campaign was made with Warcraft III patch 1.27.
There is a known crash when loading the epilogue "The True King" right after
completing the previous level, "Shadow of the Reaper". The best way to avoid
this error is to quit after the victory screen and load the epilogue manually.

Mathias Chronicles Redux Demo (Campaign)

Reviews
08:56, 11th Oct 2014 Orcnet: This is one of the great work of a campaign thanks for the previous makers and current ones who can bring up this awesome masterpiece back into action, the scenery, story line, and above all how it all would end is...

Played the game but for some reason the second chapter wouldent load(might be cuz i am using patch 1.29 doe),cant say much with only one map played but i loved the cinematics and the sceneries.

Noticed something that might be a bug tho.
Screenshot

The circled guy is labeled as a wounded claw clan and not a citizen (kinda gives up the subplot)

Also i would really really love it if you incorporated the QWER hotkey system on hero and units alike :)

I'll think about the QWER setup in the near future. In the meantime, the second level not loading is a problem...
I've never encountered a crash except for the last level, so it could be patch-related? I purposely chose
patch 1.27 since I heard it was the most "stable". That sucks though...

Thanks for pointing out the villager with the wrong faction! I fixed the issue with yet another upload.

Dear author, I'd like to translate your excellent campaign into Chinese, OK? I want Chinese Warcraft players to experience the battle.

Sure thing!

I never encountered a crash the map just stuck at a point on the loading screen and wasen't moving anymore,at first i thought it could be long loading times but the first map loaded just fine...Probably patch related no doubt.

Well done making exploration truly rewarding. I think the default difficulty may be a bit too easy. Hard to balance though when there are so many cool things to find that allows the player to get their heroes very powerful. In any case, this is fun to play, nice work!

Hey Jayborino! Glad you had fun with the campaign. I tried my best to reward players who tend to explore more, and probably went overboard on the tomes!
I'll look to rebalance the campaign when I can.

*EDIT*
In the meantime, I've uploaded a new version of the campaign, this time with ALL the levels unlocked
for play. This will be a regular practice moving forward. I've also upped the difficulty a bit by adding
more enemies during their attack waves. Enjoy!

Here I find other bug.
1. Pic1 somehow there're some items, and when this green immolation effect appeared all heroes died.
2. Pic2 This optional quest update shown as main quest
3. Mathias 3 and 4 abilities hotkey are both "C"
The final throne scene is great, just like the same in CG

I played three (EDIT: now four) chapters till now and found some bugs. Please kindly see to them. I notice the blocker issue and terrain issues have been taken care of. Please ignore if you updated them. I am marking each chapter out of 5, and the full marks gotten will be adjusted to give my HIVE Ratings to the campaign.

Prologue

It Keeps crashing on my pc. I guess it is because of patching issues? Dunno.

Chapter 1 Skirmish At Ranfurly

1. Spelling mistake in the Description. Lol, yeah I noticed that. You wrote “Toops” instead of “troops”. Kindly correct.

2. I see in your maps a tendency to add the name of the person with whom the hero has to converse with as a choice, choosing which will result in being kicked back to the choice menu again. In this chapter, similarly, why is the Town Mayor in one of the choice topics? You could have named the conversation thread “The Town Mayor”. I am not some specialist, but I am sure there is an option to do so in WE.

3. I love how you remade the village and the starting point ( forest) from the original Mathias. PLUS 1 MARK for that ;)

4. Why is Snalye the invulnerable villager hostile in the Wounded Claw Clan? He is the guy beside the mayor. Look into it.

5. What the hell!! While fighting the trolls, I happened to kill the warlord before the other trolls were killed which triggered the cutscene when the other trolls kept on attacking my units although they stood still. I lost all my footmen in that. You should have paused their attacks. This glitch/mistake existed in The Mathias Original too.

6. Duncan’s Book of Holy Light has Left Click To Use even though it is a passive item

7. Why are there pink squares in the pool near the base?

8. It would have been better if Lord Duncan and Mathias were not strength based together, heh heh.

9. Duncan’s Righteous Fury has such an icon which makes me think that it is a throwable spell. I forget it is a slam-ground-stun spell… oof, wasted mana in that spell so many times for nothing.

10. The Part I remember from the original Mathias which concerned shooting at ranged trolls on high ground has been edited out… Interesting… It was too annoying anyways.

11. I dunno why but I thought there was a time limit in this chapter in the original Mathias. I May be Wrong. But this was better since it made no sense for a time limit.

12. Wonderful Music!! Love them!

FM :- 4/5 (Cool if not for bugs)

CHAPTER II – Black Powder In The Leaves

1. It would be better if you maybe add a custom story related map or something in the loading screens? Because Arthas staring me in the eye is scary, heh heh, just saying.

2. Oh my god.., I hated this map when I played it in the original lol. It was kinda hard for me. But the changed location of the base is an eye candy for me, a person who loves changes, oof. EDIT: Maybe not change in location, but the dwarf thing at first is probably a change. I don’t remember properly though.

3. Uhh what is this?? Terrain glitch near base? (I guess this is taken care of)

4. You cannot enter the area with the Level 10 Red Dragon Mother due to terrain leveling error leading to the Optional Quest to be unplayable. (Taken Care of)

5. Why do we have control of the villagers in Kyreen’s base too?

6. Mathias’ dialogue “We spent DAYS laying siege to this base” really? I don’t think so lol.

7. Many high ground terraining done wrong and made the areas un-enterable.

8. Why can only Mathias speak to the goblins?

9. Except some random roaming units here and there, looked like the enemy base never attacked. This seemed a lot easier than the original level, probably was a noob then.

FM :- 3/5

CHAPTER III – LORD PICKETT’S CHARGE

1. I remember many glitches existed in this map, and they kinda still exist. At the start, Lord Pickett has two icons in the top left corner.

2. More terrain glitches near the orc base.

3. I like how you made it that no hero can be controlled during the charge. I remember many glitches during the original in this map.

4. Why are you given green rifleman and the barracks trains red ones?

5. Why does Malcolm’s spell Highfather’s Divine Edict named “Learn Highfather’s Divine Edict” ?

6. Short and sweet map. Nice Easter Egg with the goblin Merchants from the previous map.

FM:- 4.5/5 (I liked this map the best until now)

EDIT:

CHAPTER IV – CLASH AT COBDEN’S RIDGE

1. I really liked the concept of this map during the original. A sneaky map indeed.

2. Grammar mistake in Nezatch’s dialogue “…forces led Mathias” :- “led BY Mathias” … What the hell am I doing, correcting spelling and grammar mistakes -_-

3. Why give two “Cloaks of Shadow” at the start? One she already had, and one was in the chest.

4. Interesting, the same map has been reutilized. Great.

5. Interesting how you made exploring enjoyable and rewarding with Mud Golems and Chests.

6. I did not notice it last mission. Even an item called Battlehelm has “Left Click To Use” but it isn’t a passive item.

7. Nice meeting You guys Rodders and Delz again!

8. What the hell is up with these random roaming orc workers here and there?!

9. Heh, towers dropping items, that is strange.

10. I did not notice one more thing previously, Mathias’ two abilities have clashing abilities.

11. One thing I want to complain about is the annoying respawn of heroes out of nowhere, lol, I thought after destroying the Altars, I would have peace. OOF, but it was not the case at all.

12. Bro, destroying the base was so easy, if it was not for the annoying hero respawns. Honestly, I did not lose any unit at all (I used resurrection once) and I destroyed the whole base. I did not even use Mathias, who remained back at the base for defense.

13. Great Map. Loved it.

FM :- 4/5 (Great!)

Further maps will be remarked on and reviewed as I play them. Please update these.

Thanks for the invaluable feedback @Otherknownoise and @Abishkar . Even the grammar related ones, which is really tough since I try to go through every line as much as I can!

I uploaded a newer version for the benefit of future players:

- Fixed clashing Mathias spell shortcuts.
- Fixed Forest Trolls killing your troops after killing the Warlord.
- Removed the extra Cloak of Shadows in the fourth level.
- Made the AI attack in larger waves for the first, second, fourth and fifth level. (I hope not too aggressive)
- Fixed small lines of dialogue, quest classifications and grammar errors
- Other problems are relics of Savage Potato's work, but I'll try to quash them as much as I can.

Thanks again for the feedback! Nice to see people who played the original and can note the changes!

this is a remake or a redux version of that campaign. That campaign was made by Savage Potato. Some guy requested Med.MapGuy to remake this campaign to make it look better since the previous ones had a lot of bugs. Thus, this campaign was born. And the update could not be done since savage Potato is not active any more on Hive @Shellshock

Is there a download link for classic still? I mean now that you've remade it, will players be able to download the original source file as well or you've replaced it completely?

@PrinceOfThaWest: The original campaigns are still here, this has only been merged with the
demo version of the remake made by Med. MapGuy.
It is still in the Map Section & will remain there. :)

@Med. MapGuy: Considering the many patches this is currently receiving, I am going to wait
with my review.
However, since this resource had already been approved in the past & resources don't just get
unapproved, I am putting it back to "Approved" based on the old review. :)

Even though there are updates happening, I had already started my recorded playthrough and I don't want to lose my hero item and XP progress. I know sometimes it carries over, but in this case the name of the campaign file changed, so I don't think the save file will properly transfer. In any case, the changes I've seen seem good, but not huge so I think it's all good for me to stay on the version I've been playing on.

Usually the game cache works if you start the following chapter assuming you've finished the previous one.
Loading save games doesn't work however since the maps are "completely" changed when overwritten.
The game cache file is probably named the same way as before.

Indeed - I should have clarified, the campaign file is named differently so I'm guessing the cache is also different to match the new campaign file name as they usually share the same name. Ultimately, I should have just checked on this, but past experience points towards it not matching and the version I'm on seems fine and I'm already through the chapters he has changed.

Can be checked in the editor if the maps are not protected or hopefully Med. MapGuy will answer this.
Another thing you can do is save the campaign in a separate folder within that of the Campaigns, make the chapter you were supposed to be continuing, visible in the campaign editor. This way, if the cache is different it won't load your heroes as you left them.

Yeah not much has been updated, except some of the bugs pointed before. None are gamebreaking so there is nothing to worry about. You can continue your playthrough.

Well, decided to play this to revitalize my Warcraft III spirits lol.

Finished playing it moments ago and I must say it was enjoyable. I liked the terrain and the cinematics, it was beautiful and engaging till the last level.

I haven't encountered game breaking bugs. Just one in the last chapter where I have to kill Malakai (spoilers!), once I killed him and his base, the ending cinematic did not take over and I restarted the chapter to see if it persisted but it end well on my second try.

Found some typos in some skills and errors in some upgrades. Also the dwarven hero (flying gryphon) don't have an ultimate skill and the rifleman dwarven hero in the bonus chapter have no available skills/abilities, were these intentional? I just find them bothersome to not have any. Talking about skills, the volley of arrows of Kyreen deals no damage at all and her poison arrows do not have mana cost.

Some choice of models could have been better but that's just my personal taste.

Another thing to mention was in chapters were you have to build a base and attack the enemy, I noticed that the enemy don't have any AI because they don't attack my expansion bases just the main base, they just spawn at certain point and attack. Its not much of the problem anyway.

Nonetheless, it was fun and the story was quite intriguing. I would love to play the sequel as soon its available. Good luck and happy mapping!

Looks neat and epic. Me wanna try this during this lockdown to fend off boredom and get some thrills.
Nice thread. Nice eye-candy design to attract players. I will try this and gonna give my feedback later when I finished th e 200MB campaign.

I suggest you can have a custom .mpq for this if it gets larger in the next episode or book. :)

You really see an interesting campaign just for the graphics and although it is for Warcraft 3, for those graphics it seems that it was reinforced, good job I congratulate you, I have patch 1.27b I think it is the one indicated and recommended to play, but I have a ask what to do when I enter the personalized campaign (Mathias Chronicles I - The Pursuit) it is normal that between and all the chapters and maps are available without having to play them I want to know if the game is really like this? or is it just me?

@Shar Dundred Considering the many patches this is currently receiving, I am going to wait
with my review.

@Verb8im Any chance you can add a change log to the description?

Yeah, I should have implemented a changelog sooner. But I figured a lot of the changes since launch have been minor bug fixes and AI tweaks. No real big balance changes. I'll try to put one up when I have the time.

@Jayborino Even though there are updates happening, I had already started my recorded playthrough and I don't want to lose my hero item and XP progress. I know sometimes it carries over, but in this case the name of the campaign file changed, so I don't think the save file will properly transfer. Very entertaining playthrough, I don't think you need to restart. Seeing you play has made me aware of the issues with difficulty and overabundance of items, but in some ways that's by design, I wanted to make a "fun" campaign. (maybe I went too far, so my latest change added a few more enemies when the AI attacks)

@deepstrasz Can be checked in the editor if the maps are not protected or hopefully Med. MapGuy will answer this

I never changed the campaign's cache's name so it should still work despite my newer versions. I also don't protect my campaigns so feel free to poke around.

@Sclammerz Finished playing it moments ago and I must say it was enjoyable. I liked the terrain and the cinematics, it was beautiful and engaging till the last level.

Heey, glad you had fun! I'm taking in all the feedback and hopefully I can apply them for future works. The only honest answer I can give for the lack of ultimates for the Dwarves is that I simply ran out of time. I set a deadline to release the campaign since I kept missing them so I'm afraid I had to cut some corners.

@Verb8im Also, are you remaking the other campaigns in the series?

I'm working on other stuff at the moment, but I do know that Mathias has a short orc campaign after the first part... So maybe I might remake that one day.

I just stumbled upon this and it caught my attention so I tried it out, here's what I think so far:

Chapter 1 :
The cinematics and story were very well made, but, apart from that, I've found the gameplay to be lacking in many aspects, you receive way too many units for the already small pathing that you are forced to walk through, it's just too cramped and unless you go forward only, you end up being path blocked at every step you take.

The difficulty was between normal and hard, that is until you get a base, after that, it turns into nothing more than a lame attempt of emulating strategy, simply ordering my units to auto-attack was enough to get me through the level, especially with the numerous reinforcements I got, seriously why did I get so many reinforcements? it was already easy enough without them! talking about the reinforcements, I didn't even notice it when they arrived, there was no audio clue to indicate when it happened nor did any cutscene or camera movement to their spawn area ever happen, only a short timed text message that passed unnoticed at the corner of my screen.

Later into the mission, I found out that it was completely devoided of the most basic principles of strategy, what do I mean by that? I attempted to destroy the unit production facilities of the enemy to only find out that they spawned out of thin air, it made all my actions feel weightless, the fact that I don't even need to think on ways to defeat my enemy to progress, if you're going to do it like that then what's the point? I could have just watched a cinematic instead ... As far as first impressions go, this single chapter killed any expectations I had for this campaign what so ever, but, I know it wouldn't be right to judge it based on just one mission, so I will play a few more chapters and see if it improves.

Chapter 2 :
Once again the story and cinematic are great and all but the gameplay remains the same, the pathing has improved, my units now have more space to move around, but ... this campaign is still lacking any challenge at all, my base didn't even get attacked once throughout the whole mission, the AI either sits in his base not doing anything to stop you from taking the whole map or attacks once every 10 years.

Let's talk about the items now, there are too many trash items being dropped by creeps and barrels, I've seen the same stats on different items time and time again, that's not necessary at all, simply add better item rewards or decrease the item spawn rate.

Now to the heroes themselves, Mathias is so overpowered that despite my army dying on my first assault, I've just destroyed the whole enemy base using only Mathias, the enemy artillery would even help me siege their own buildings due to splash damage, he just stood there inside the main enemy base, killing the armies that would spawn out of nowhere, he had so much armor and health from the items that not only does he take little to no physical damage but he out heals it back with a life steal item, as if that wasn't enough he can also holy light himself if it comes to it ...

Chapter 3 :
This will be the final chapter that I will be playing. If there's one thing this campaign does right is to make you immersed and hyped throughout the story and cinematics, it attempts to create an ocean of large and epic battles, but, it does so with the depth of a puddle, the final wave of the enemy felt more like their first real attack to me ...

Final Verdict:
If you are more casual about it and play only for the story, then this is for you, otherwise don't get your hopes up.

Yeah, well you can't please everyone. I'll take note on making my next campaigns more challenging.

@javie I have a question then which campaign should I play first to understand the story of the orcs or the campaign of the humans of mathias? .......... I would like to know, the levels are blocked from both campaigns?

This is first part of the remake of the original Mathias campaign, no need to play anything else to catch-up.

If I understand what you want to tell me, but I want to know which campaign is played first to understand the story? that of the first orcs or that of mathias is that what i mean?

For example the Turnro campaigns, the one played by rowan the wise first and then the orcs and ends with the night elf you understand?

Hi, I've lately been replaying through custom campaigns and was playing through this one since I remember the demo being good.

Now, I got up to chapter six and everything was fine until then, but suddenly in the intro cinematic there is a necromancer on Prince Mathias' side? I had never seen him before and he's just there, telling Mathias that its good to know who to trust and all. Is there supposed to be a cinematic I missed? I've gone back and looked over the previous chapters and on Lord Picket's Charge there is a necromancer that I just never found while playing the chapter.

Have I just missed something? It seems to be a pretty big story point that a necromancer (or at least wizard) called Kel'Zarach would help me.

Otherwise, very enjoyable campaign, just a bit confused at the moment!

I've gone back and looked over the previous chapters and on Lord Picket's Charge there is a necromancer that I just never found while playing the chapter.

Glad you enjoyed that decade old demo. Looking back, I can scarcely believe it's done. I do hate unfinished business. As for ol' Kel'Zarach, I should have made his presence more apparent in the earlier levels. He actually appears briefly in the third level, and also the fourth level on the hill near your base where he offers Mathias support. I was unfortunately planning a special interlude before the sixth level where he meets Mathias to pledge his loyatly... but had to can it due to time constraints.

I played this in Public test. Does this work any other way yet?
So i finished it today. It was very satisfying in so many ways.
But man this terrain took away alot of my joy.
There were So many times i got stack in an allye.
I will be fair though because i havent played the original campaign and i wont stick to this perticular critisism.
Overall it was really good fun and the story obviously is fantastic as most of the quests.
I know that my opinion is one sided due to lack of more knowledge.
I try to be respectful to the effort put in these works.
I appriciate you making campaigns like these.

So many items have discription that doesnt match the stats
also some items are way too overpowed to be introduced this early
like the life steal item in chapter 1 and the bash shield also chapter 1
the hero spells are out of balancing . long stun durations
methias needs lots of mana (3 spells ) as str hero
while the int hero has 1 spell
also others already mentioned that the campaign is too easy
neeeds A lot of tweaking ....
overall fresh characters and items
looking forward .
