Science, and Mathematics (especially algebra) are just as important as being Literate.
Without a basic foundation in these subjects...well...you can't really do much of anything.
Art, and Literature, and History are also equally important.
Art develops the side of the brain that the academic classes do not, literature expands your vocabulary and your ability to comprehend, history shows you what to do in government, and how to be a citizen, and the heroic, and infamous...things that brought your current state of being into existence.
Mathematics (algebra especially), shows you...how to count...which is rather important...and then how to apply numerical values to achieve an end.
Algebra is especially important for taxes, and marketing, so...if you don't have a basic understanding of math, you are going to end up doing something rather illegal on your tax forms, and that means a fine, and prison time.
Science teaches you rather basic things like...gravity hurts when you fall off a cliff...And it teaches you WHY your cells need 8 glasses of water a day, and why drinking nothing but straight sugar water rots your teeth and gives you diabetes.
There is a rhyme and a reason for every subject, even if there are parts of each subject that have disagreeable material.
