Legendary Terrains

That they may be, but it can't be that hard to make those terrains useful in a game. Just us pathing editor or something, but if that's what they're intended for.. Anyways inspiration to map makers. Better terrain = Better map.
:D

Its not so easy to simply add pathing blocks, you have to make the terrain look good in every angle. And with all these doodads placed, the game will lag a lot.

1 thing i hate about the legendary terrains they make people discourage if ur new since ur like in awe and u think u can never make a semi decent terrain after seeing them 1st i saw them i would post any terrains i had made lol

People should spend less time complaining about people's grammar and spelling, and spend more time deciphering and understanding the affected message :-)

Anyway, void, I'm certain that your understanding of playable is as long as you have a walkable path it's fine - which is fair enough. And then you ONLY have paths, with a row of pathing blockers around the outside, where there's trees etc that actually have no pathing. That was what you did in the TC, as did other people, which is such a retarded method. How would you ever make an open forest :/. If you're still using that method, D:

When I made some playable terrains, basing the map off the UTM, I placed pathing blockers in everything, even at the trees and rocks. Later on, I discovered something know as Pathing Texture :P

Besides, a new Playable TC would be good.

That's what I did in the TC... half a year ago... what do you think I've been doing for the past few months when I haven't been posting any screenshots? (I know you're going to say sitting on your ass, and that's totally right, but I did a bit of map stuff too :<)

Although I must say I'm really not a big fan of open forests. They just don't work so well in maps, except maybe every once in a while.

All I can say is... wow. These are truly magnificent.

These ~Void~ and MadseN characters have really got it in them.
And that double-man terrain with the night sky is priceless. I didn't even know people did co-productions when it comes to terraining.

i think showcased terrain ( legendary ones ) all used exponential scaling...

in other words, things in the background are many times smaller then things close to the camera view.

If you were to make it playable, the scaling would all have to be the same. So really you cant turn these into playable terrains.

Also, im not bragging or anything, but i make pretty awsome playable terrains...and i make okay showcase terrains... but everyone has there own style... Void's style is different from mine, and in there own unique ways, make our terrain special... and in Voids cases..legendary.

tbh I don't like the burning sky picture (3rd).
I think there are way better terrain pictures on hive.

Yes there are better pictures than the burnning sky but its legendary cause it was the first of that sort of a idea. He/She was the first to make a terrain with that sort of sky or theme.

there probably arn't better pictures on the hive .

somewhere else, like WC3campaigns. That may have better pictures. But these legendary pics are one of the best. Chosen for reasons ranging from personal promotion to excellent uberness =p

ex : The burning sky is probably the best co terrain on the hive. Not to mention its Epic lighting effect.

ex 2 : the frost whisper hand is a dedication.

I was only talking about that terrain ofc, however the only thing I like about the burning sky is (sigh) the sky. The terrain around it is well fine but not that interesting. If I take a look at terrain made by Raid1000 or something then I'd say those terrains are much more interesting.

Shouldn't we be going after what indeed looks best instead of what has been done first? I totally agree with Teuncreemers, many of raid's terrain are far more interesting than terrains up here, but they don't seem to make it.

Well raid1000 was just an example of me. And I really don't mind about those 'first ever done' terrains in here. It makes sence. I just didn't know it was the first time it was done however... There are so much other terrains that are damn imba aswel which makes me wonder why they're not here.:D

Well, my opinion is that first-done-terrains lose their awesomeness the second someone else makes a better copy.

The legendary terrains are not necessarily the best executed terrains among all the terrains out there. But this thread is not a thread made to show-of the most beautiful terrains there are. Its made to honor the terrains that made forth inspiration, and inventiveness. Terrains that evolved a new wave of other, greater terrains. If not for many of these terrains and the terrainers who made them's wisdom, we today might very well not make as good or greater terrains ourselves. THAT is why they are here, because they meant something, they represented something. If that is a new technique or just inspirational content is not for me to judge, but I respect the creator of this thread enough to not go about and tell HIM what he should and should not include in HIS thread.

Or just an other thread called Top 10 terrains or so, which will be updated for new terrains. I think it is important to value not only what has been done first, but also what looks best right now. In my opinion many of the newer terrains that are made now are have much higher quality than the ones that are in this thread and should receive more fame than they do now.

I can only agree with you, Megafyr.
So additional to this "Greatest Classics" collection, have a more frequently updated, competitive list. I'd strive to make something that was worthy of a place in it. And it would also be very nice to always be able to see the newest brilliance of the good artists. Great idea. I'll have a cup of tea on that. +Tea Megafyr

I'm gonna start recommending some terrains then...

Cogs by raid1000, because it really sticks out. The lightning is awesome, and the structures too.

Arthas by Void. The sky says it all.

Unnamed picture attached by Destructor [DoR]. It has a unique atmosphere, and is really original.

I attached the images so you can see them.

For those who didn't notice. This thread isn't about what's made first such as the legendary, it's all about execution and what looks best right now.
