Icarathian Game Project!

A day or so after new year's I had this idea.

Since I'm currently working on learning JOGL, and since I had this icarathian model I was working on, it gave me an idea.

Why not make an icarathian game?

So currently I'm working on making the model file importer, and afterwards I'll actually render the model on the screen.

I also thought that I could add something that lets you color your character as you wish. All that you'd have to do is put down the base colors on the pattern: the shading and everything would be applied in the program.

I'm planning on making it into an RPG/adventure/puzzle game. As usual, if I start on a big project like this by myself I probably won't get even close to finishing.

So I'm recruiting people who'd like to work on this with me. I'm currently looking for the following:

  • Programmers that are experienced with java. If you have already worked with AWT, some form of 3D programming, networking, or images, that would be a definite plus.
  • Lowish-poly modelers (like in the 1000-2000 range)
  • Texturers
  • People that can make user interfaces and/or icons
  • An animator (not as important)
  • A musician that can make ambient/environment background music (not needed at the moment but I might need one in the future)
  • A bunch of cheerleaders to keep us motivated :D

Of course, if you can do multiple things then that's even better. I'm not looking for a large team for this project - just a couple people.

So yeah. Anyone interested?

Hmm, I already have a whole bunch of people on icons.

What I could really do with a lot of at the moment is concept ideas for creeps and stuff.

Basically the game will have three main areas:
- One is in a city 50 or so years in the future (so it'd look pretty similar to now but with some improvements and stuff)
- One is in the antarctic, so there will be snow and ice and shit. Also there will be buildings and stuff on an oil-drilling project
- One is in the forest, so there will be things like deforestation and fires and crap

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of skills that would be incredibly useful to the making of your RPG, but I (and a lot of other people) support you. Just thought I'd let you know that. :infl_thumbs_up:

umm for the forest area, it would be good to have a blight like thing that doesnt have bones imbeded in it and better than blizz trees, that is needed
p.s. what kind of ambience music do you want?

I've already got three music people at the moment, so I don't think I'll be needing any more.

Copypasta'd from my dA journal:

Alright, so I've pretty much decided (for now) that I'll be using this awesome graphics engine called Irrlicht. There's a lovely java port of it too :D. It also supports .md2, .3ds, and .x model files, so I don't have to worry about finding a .md2 export script for 3ds max any more.

So, more to the point. I'll start handing out tasks to people either today or tomorrow, so expect some of that soon. I have no idea how long this game's going to take to make, so you don't have to worry about much of a deadline.

For now, what I could really use are concepts and ideas.

Here's the general idea so far:

You start off by creating your icarathian, choosing what gender/name/breed (fancy, polar, feral) it is and designing its fur coloring. Depending on your breed, you will start the specified game. The starting areas are different but you can move around into the other ones (rather like WoW, as an example most people are familiar with), going along at your own pace.

The starting zone for the polars will be (unsurprisingly) in a generic snowy and icy area. You can hop on a boat to the mainland after a while. The fancies will start in a village and the ferals will start in a generic forest.

I could also do with a decent name for this project, as "Icarathian Game" doesn't really have much of a "ring" to it, if you get what I mean.

I know a lot of programming languages and am learning java(more than half way through). I also draw contepts, make icons, talk nonsenses all the time and somewhere in between, i'm sometimes useful. I also like the icharthian. Oh and i have a semi-working rendering engine layout in java which i made from scratch(by semi-working i assume it works in theory but needs some trigonometry fixes irl). Want me in?

I already have the graphics engine sorted, but I could always use more people. :D

First attempt at the squirrel-thingy. Lulz. Looks more like one of py's old avatars than what it's supposed to be.

I downloaded irrlicht java binder so i'll try to learn how to use it now. Any tips?

First, make sure it was jirr that you downloaded and not Bindenlicht. The latter is older and has not been updated for a few years whereas jirr still gets updated whenever irrlicht gets updated.

Second, download the source code and follow along with the examples.

In that case, tell me what ya need Py.

I could do with a bunch of indoor doodads. Things like tables, chairs, beds, etc.
