seventy Hydras unburrow on top of my friend's army of eighty marines and five siege tanks.

Thats 140 pop vs 95 pop.... You probably would have won even without the element of suprize considering your army was not only worth more but larger. I got the meat grinder achievement against AI when I obleterated their armies with MMM and some tanks.

In my experience, Hydras are awesome mid-game units. I got the Meat Grinder achievement when I had an army of seventy Hydras unburrow on top of my friend's army of eighty marines and five siege tanks.
Based on that anecdote I'm guessing you are not at a high enough level of play to judge whether Hydralisks are viable or not in TvZ.

(Long story short, they are viable against most stuff but are bad against Tanks, and almost every Terran gets Tanks. Units like Thors/Hellions also counter them but they can hide behind Roaches etc as long as Tanks aren't around).

Hydras seem to be pretty good on creep anyway especially with +1 range, when i mute rush to harras i then do a quick tech switch to hydra for map control then finish the game of with broods if it drags on... also my opponent had 3 thors around 10 marines and 3-5 tanks and a few marauders and i had around 30 hydras or so and it was pretty close but i won, even if i lost i had around 30-50 more hydras building for map control and i had 7 bases and he had 1 because the hydras managed to have map control... i have similar encounters of vsing banshess among other things with them...

Thors are not particually super effective against hydralisks due to damage wastage and slow attack rate. Marines die fast to hydras and the number involved is barly worth mentioning (10 marines is prety usless). I take it the tanks were in siege mode which would explain why it was close (before the nerf you would have lost probably due to tanks splash obliterating hydras).

You should have sent in a few ultralisks along with that, they would have made short work of all the units present (bonus VS armored and cleave or atleast take some fire from the tanks). Additionally brood lords would have provided great support as thors are not really effective against them and you did not say he had vikings.

Hydralisks are a sort of glass cannon unit. Their DPS is pretty good for their cost but their endurance is not so and against better units they usually fail fast. High templars and siege tanks are pretty effective against them. They however are very effective against marines (especially smaller numbers with units tanking) and gate units (zealots need to melee them and stalkers get no bonus as they are not armored).

Hydras are only really good (IMO) for 1 thing, 2 if you set up right. 1, Raids and surprise attacks, like using a nydus worm to deploy a lot into a base. 2 If you throw enough meatshields in, then they can be used more front line, but even still a siege tank in siege form will rip them up with splash damage, and since zerglings are too weak to use late game, your stuck with a lot of roaches or a few ultra's, and both wont be able to take on large amounts of marines and other units defending, because of the siege tanks hammering them from afar.

Really, they'd come down to how a player uses them and combines them with other units.

yea they were in siege mode and it was after patch so i didnt quite get obliterated and their werent to many vikings as he wasnt exactly investing in any one thing he seemed to be getting abit of everything, i also had around 3-5 mutas which i used to take out the sieges first up, after i had distracted the vikings to go into ground mode with my hydras... also i found a neat trick that most people already know, use brood lords on a mass of marines or something with sieged tanks nearby, the sieged tanks attack the broodlings that spawn and deal a decent amount of damage to the marines, i beat 70 marine +10 marauders with 5 brood lords, and the tanks as well :) then my hydras cleared up the rest, so hydras are good just got to use them in conjuction with other units usually

yea but this was before i saw a major use in banelings... i usually go lings+banelings now then move into a muta harras and hydras then broods... i might adjust to their tech but you get the basic idea

aye, but i still like using broods :p

they tend to be hard to stop if used against an unsuspecting opponent, specially backed up with mutas/corrupters
