I'm making a map where I need to make long walls of mountains that almost surround the whole map. This is kind of what I'm going for (no snow):

The Warcraft cliffs obviously don't fulfil my needs of making these mountains. Although terrain isn't exactly the most important thing in the map, and I'm not even that good at terraining, I still want the mountains to look good. Can someone give me pointers, ideas or even provide screenshots of Warcraft mountains?

Also, I understand something like this could be used, but it just looks more like a hill or something.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Making a mountains depends from many things. Firslty, are supposed to close to camera or on backround far away. Also do you want sharp edges on your mountains or convex(round) mountains. Aslo do you use thinck fog or not. If you cold give this kind of info, then i think you will get better answer for your problem.

Doesn't need anything more. I just wanted a slight idea on how to make mountains, and that was delivered. As I said, I'm just making a map that doesn't emphasize on the terrain, so I probably came to the wrong board, but eh. Thanks anyway.

Here is how to make very realistic mountains.

-Use a Camera angle that has FOV of about 100+
-Use the Raise tool in conjunction with the smooth tool to get hills. make sure you make these hills at the prespective of your camera.

-When making realistic mountains, always make sure that the incline of mountains is not too drastic, and that there are small sharp points and elongated decline points so that your "mountains" dont look too smooth or too pointy.

- When making mountains, you will always want sometype of fog+sky combo that compliments your mountains.
-When you make a mountain, your prespective is key.It takes hard work and practice to make realistic mountains.

Hope this helps for not only you but for everyone else.

He's doing it for a map.

Best tip from me, start with the 8 brush and work your way down using both raise and lower until you get to the 3 brush for jagged rocky bits and details. Use scraggly trees, shrubs and boulders. Nothing's uglier than a bunch of bare rock tile.

Try to mix things up a bit by adding land features such as larger rocky outcrops, small forests, open areas, plateaus, cliffs, rockslides, streams, waterfalls, etc. Mountains are just as versatile an environment (if not more so) than forests or anything else. Mountains are also BIG, so I'd advise you to make some of the mountainous area (the lower parts) playable because if you do it right it's gonna take up a good quarter of your map on either side.

Here are some concept images to get you started:
