How slice model for use with 4 512x512 textures instead of 1 of 1024x1024 texture?

Hi! I've found old post of tobyfat50: Starcraft 2 Conversion Pack

He talking here about using high resolution textures (1024x1024) by slicing geometry and using multiply 512x512 textures, and something that i found is a plugin for 3d max 2009: Texture Atlas Generator | ScriptSpot

However, i did not understand how to use that to slice a geometry and use my 1024x1024 texture. Can anyone explain me how tobyfat50 did that and how i can do that as well? Thanks a lot.
