How does spiked carapace work?

How does the actual ability work. Meaning it can give the unit additional armor, reduction to damage, and return damage back to the attacker.

When damage is done to a unit-- armor type, attack type, unit damage, and buffs are all taken into account to give a final damage.

I did some tests and it turns out that spiked carapace does NOT reflect damage based on the final damage
(Ex: final damage done to unit = 18.
Returned damage = 15.
Returned damage factor is supposed to be 40%)

That is about double what is supposed to happen so I'm sure the ability is using damage done BEFORE armor or buff or attack type is taken into account

How do I find that order the game uses when doing damage?
Is there a thread for it or does someone know?

It would be something like
1st. Unit damage
2nd. Damage type
3rd. Other unit armor type
4th. Other unit armor amount

Where would spells, auras, reduction of damage etc, go in this list?

I know its a challenging question but thanks!
