How do I rotate doodads to make them look nice?

If it still doesn't turn, then find the doodad you want to turn in Object Editor and look for the field: "Art - Fixed Rotation" - if that field has value 0 or higher, it has a fixed rotation (= can't turn it). To get free rotation, set the value to -1. Then you can do what Rheiko wrote.

In the object editor, make a custom version of the doodad that you want and set the fields:
Art - Max Roll Angle (degrees)
Art - Maximum Pitch Angle (degrees)
to values between 0 and -6.28.
