[Spell] How can I make vampire aura work for ranged attackers?

I'm making an item that gives the holder a vampiric attack, but it only works for melee attackers. I've tried giving it the ability of "Vampire Aura" and the ability of "Vampire Potion," but neither have let a ranged attacker heal from their attacks. Any help would be appreciated!
