For me (i dont really know thought)

Melee is the default because your triggers,abilities,units use the Warcraft III engine default codes

If you put custom you must provide some code to run your triggers,abilities,units, aside from Warcraft III engine which means it may cause problem..

Default -> Original WC3 TFT if custom, lattest patch if melee.
Latest Patch -> Always latest patch.

Triggers are not part of the data set so are not affected in any way.
What it does mean is that buildings like the Undead Necropolis will have either their very strong piercing attack (original version) or their weaker slow attack (patched version).

If you are basing your map off modifier melee, you will want to use the latest patch as that includes all balance changes.
