Earlier this summer, I began working on a survival-based (If it helps, think of the game show) map taking place in the taiga of Canada. The story goes that while flying in a plane with friends to Anchorage, your pilot suddenly has a heart attack. You act quickly to take control of the plane and crash-land yourselves somewhere in the Canadian Wilderness. I wanted the map to feel wild and untamed. I wanted it to feel like you could get lost easily, and you never know whats around the corner. During the course of the game the player would have to hunt or trap for food, build a fire and shelter, and use their intuition to create tools that will allow them to survive better in the wilderness. Ultimately, the players could team up and kill the other survivors, or last late into the game when a storm resurfaces the sunken plane and with it an activatable help beacon.

The following are screenshots of the half-completed map. Any and all suggestions to make the terrain feel more natural and possible ideas for future forests or landscaping would be greatly appreciated (im out of ideas). Also, on a side note, i desperately need someone to help with triggers..but thats not what this threads for :D.

Two words: tree variation. The trees get a little repetitive if you catch my drift. Also, the trees aren't made by you, y'know. So don't say ALL custom models were made by you.

Oops lawl good point.
I only have 2 trees atm, both of them are downloaded.
Also the moose model was downloaded, everything else was pretty much reskinned....

It took me a while to figure out how to turn a custom model into a tree...I can make other variations of the tree (turn it sideways, make taller), but how do i incorporate it into the brush. Like when you select ashenvale tree wall, you get a variety of trees, not just one like is seen here...

The different variations are all separate models - when you make a destructable (keyword destructable) like the Trees you should have the option to make multiple variations in a single destructable. Really its not much different then having seperate desctructables or doodads (be it that these werent intended to be destroyable or just scenery) - Its probably easier to work with seperate destructables since you can place a specefic variation with more accuracy without having to edit it manually by double clicking it.

Now that i think about it thats probably better, but its easier to just layout 4 different models with one stroke then going in and replacing each individual tree but...thats what ill probably end up doing anyway.

instead of making your custom model a destructible, just make it into a doodad, preferably using the " torch " model as your base.

If it HAS to be a destructible, then go with the barrel, or something like that, which only uses 1 variant.

The trees arnt just decorations, they're part of the gameplay. You cut down trees for wood in the form of items..i know it sounds weird but its a system that works. If the trees are anything other than the destructible trees they dont play the death animation when they get cut down. That would be lame..

You should add more shrubs, flowers, bushes, mushrooms, "stump hollow", logs and maybe more rocks (sunken ruins, because they're covered with something that looks like grass ^^) - most of them can be found in ashenvale environment section and sunken ruins.
