according to a couple guides i found on google, dummys are better when it comes to lag, leaks, performance but i am not sure about this

im asking the experienced guys here to do some testing to settle this

what i mean is, would it be better to have 15 specials effects or 15 dummys when you use your spell?

Well, theoretically, I think creating special effects is better, because units permanently leak, so creating more and more dummy units does the same.

However I use both - dummies and special effects. If I want to create spell effect somewhere, then I just simply create the effect as special effect. However if I want that effect to be slowed down, move, be created up in air, then I use dummy unit for that.

We do not need to give you a test map anymore. Dummies or should we say 15 units putted in a map will not really cause lag but as for 15 special effect, there is quite a chance that it will cause a lag. More if the effects is somehow big and high. For the leaks, well, dummy can cause more leaks than special effect.

after the testing i done i believe the claims about special effects are overrated

i doubt 15-25 special effects in a 0.05 periodic event will lag and
keep in mind that spell will be casted over and over again during around 1 hour and dummys count as units and leak
U can create a special effect at a point
ye...but not sure you are trying to say
I don't know about you guys but for me dummies are much more easier to manipulate than Special effects.
of course but this thread aims at lag, leaks, performance

Hmm... what would be better... special effects take up less space, that's what I know, I mean without testing it in the Editor right now all you need basically is a Point variable and you have your own special effect. Assuming you unleak that variable.

I guess the same goes for a dummy creation, but I think the special effects have an upper hand.

This is totally wrong!
When you can use special effects, use them instead of dummys.
Units are the most interactive object in Warcraft III and take up A DOZEN TIMES the amount of CPU and memory than a special effect.

Only use dummys when you need the extra functionality they provide:
Moving, scaling, changing animations, etc.

Both units and special effects create permanent leaks that can not be fixed. However, those leaks are very minor, so you shouldn't care about it that much.

So you agree with me? Dummies are of better use than special effects.
No, that's totally not what I said.
Special effects are much better, as long as you just want to play that effect and nothing else.
You should only use dummys when you need scaling, direct access to animations or want to move the effect around.

Dummies FTW.

But a reminder is to use dummy.mdx.

Btw,you can create special effects with their heights manipulated by a destructable :3

whats so special about dummy.mdx? is it that you can attach things to it?

also elaborate on the special effect and destructable thing

You can easily manipulate its special effect model by triggers than going to the Object Editor and create so many dummies just to have different models.

Sorry I won't elaborate it for now, dummies still defeat it.
