hey.anyways, always with the boring backstory first.

i have been on the chat only pretty recently and you know what i notice? there is like a new member joining every 5 min or something. now if you count all the 5 min per day, thats a lot of new people joining. obviously i am exaggerating but you get the idea. and i was wondering like, "how many people are registerd on hive?"
the answer currently? 42906! wow. thats a lot of people. a small town or something. we could have our own army and stuff. lol

then i had a thought. "how many are just empty accounts?" that means, inactivity. (why was i thinking this? well just a random thought that poped out in my incoherent mind.)

well, if you count the pages in ascending order of last visit, the first 141 pages havent visited since 2006. thats about 4200 people. they seem to have an average of 2 posts i reckon. and a good proportion of these people have idiotic name as CAN_I_KILL_U, R U Getting Your Fibre, OwnedByANoob and so on. these people joined just for the lols.

so i am suggesting we delete these account for sake of memory space. i am sure storing info on +4200 people would require certain amount of space on the hard-disk. i could be wrong.

This topic is brought up about twice a year.
No, it does not take up much space at all, and no it is not worth deleting the old accounts.

The only reason to delete them, is to free up old names, but "/care", as PurplePoot would say.

How much space does one account take up? Like in KB..
Dr Super Good, yer avatar = 20.92 kB.
Let's say that every bloody account got an avatar:
42906x20.92 = 897593,52kb = holy marraconi! 876.55566mb!

dead people are not entertaining. (unless you are into that sort of stuff, which still doesnt apply to this situation)

Sorry, I had to.

A LOT of these inactive users dont have avatars (though I guess people like me have bigger ones to offset this...)

Anyway, I personally think this WOULD be a good idea, if just to free up names (anarchianbedlam likes complaining about this :P)

DSG uses a .gif though, so it'll probably be larger than a. no avatar b. an ordinary avatar c. probably other .gif's. But yeah, I doubt that there's trouble from the avatars.

Gifs are actually very small in size. They compress very well. Unfortunately, that's why they have such a limited colour pallet. :P

It's nothing.

Exactly.
Ralle said that every backup he does takes up about 1.something GB.

Every day.

I dunno if that includes all of the old stuff though. If it does, he should delete the old backups :P
I delete them manually which means I have many*1GB laying around.

True but most people don't have avatars.

Some statistics:
We have 45k users occupying 11 MB total in the database.
Let me count the space used for avatars: 86 MB
Custom profile pics: 50 MB
Resources total: 18 GB
I also have a whole copy of wc3sear.ch on the server, which is: 8.2 GB

Server space: 500 GB

So we have plenty of space ;)

EDIT: Oh and I have 43 days * 1 GB/day of database backups :P
