Is there a custom script to remove the classification "Ward" from a unit that has been given it through the object editor? I noticed there's no GUI option.

In my specific case the suggested workaround won't be practical since i've got about 180 unit types that i'd like to be able to spawn either as controllable or non-controllable, i guess i'll have to choose between making all those copies or run with the controllable versions still as Wards but directable with right-click.
There may be some bugs with chaos, locust, and the ward classification you can abuse by adding/removing the appropriate abilities. Could be worth searching and looking into in your case with that many units.
