Either the map archive is corrupt, or you have a corrupt import. Delete all imports using a third party MPQ tool such as MPQEdit. Before touching the archive with the tool it is recommended to make at least 1 backup. Even if it is currently broken, it can always end up more broken with even less chance of recovery which is why the backups are strongly recommended.

I tried removing the suspect files from the MPQ, but I'm not sure they are really deleted, because even after removing the files, the map size remains the same as before the removal.

If the map archive is corrupt, what could have caused it?

Which is to be expected due to fragmentation. The solution is to use the compact archive functionality which rebuilds the archive without gaps.

I assume you tried to open the map after removing the imports and it did not work? Try removing all imports.

The editor application, operating system or power crashing while saving a map. One also cannot rule out bugs in WorldEdit resulting in corrupt files on save but I do not know of any.

It cannot read the war3map.w3b, which stores the object editor destructable modifications. Did they change the format in 1.27? Because the version number is different.
Had similar reports in the past. There seems to be some bug with WorldEdit that can occasionally produce corrupted destructible modifications. Delete the file from it and manually rebuild all custom and modified destructibles. Placed destructibles should be left un touched as long as you give everything the correct rawcode id.

Then I know what the problem is. I placed two set of Naga stairs too close to the map edge/boundaries. It's a problem Vexorian helped me identify long ago, something with doodad parameters being out of range.

I will follow what Dr Super Good said below and report back if I solve the problem. Thanks so far.

EDIT: WaterKnight was on the right track. I removed the .w3b file and the map was openable. I remade the custom destructibles step by step and found that when modifying the "Ramp Naga" destructibles custom minimap color is what caused the crash.

Strange indeed, but at least now I have the map recovered. Thanks for the help. SOLVED.
