Yeah, so here's the deal: last night before I went to bed I put my comp in stand by as I do ALL the time, nothing unusual. Ok, then sleep. After I woke up I powered on the comp for I wanted to see at what hour was the exam I had today (yeah, exam sunday morning with rain outside -_-) but SURPRIIIIIIZE! The fucking thing won't do anything! It turned on, all fans work, hard disk made its usual GRHASHGKASJG sound to show that it's working, but other than that...nothing. Nothing appeared on the monitor and the mouse wouldn't power on. I checked to see wether the monitor was connected alright and it was...I reset the damn thing, but still the same result...it just sits there all BUZZZZY and doing absolutely nothing else....I shut it down for good, waited a little, then powered up again and the same result. So I said fuck it, closed it down and left for uni.
After hours I came back and powered that shit up again with the same result...so I turn it off and unplug it ffs, leave it for a few seconds, plug it back in and powered on again...SAME RESULT! The damn thing is just saying "NO, FUCK YOU, I'm not doing shit today! Suck dick!".

Yeah, so basically the shit..err computer powers on and the fans and all those thingies are running, but it doesn't do absolutely anything. Doesn't boot, doesn't do the memory test thing at the begining, just NOTHING.
One thing I noticed that's weird is that when the bitch worked, it would have this sound pattern in the fans when it powered up: vrOOOOOOOOOOOOmm...vvROOOOOm...vrrrrrr and now it's just VROOOOOOOOO........ same intonation all the time.
Anyone knows what the fucker's problem is? I will love you long time for it.

P.S.: oh and you know what's the best thing in all this? Today I had my final exam...YES! THAT's RIGHT! Exam period is OVER! And I can't do shit (except beer, but until then I'll just have to sit down and look at the beautiful corner of my room 'cause the comp I'm on now is shit..but hey at least it WORKS).

Were you drinking before you wrote this?

Let's see..

Well, it could be possible that your computer doesn't get enough power.
Time to replace that old power supply of yours?
Did you say no memory test thingy at the beginning? Ever tried REPLUGGING your screen in? ^_^

Oh that'll bring my piss to a boil if it's true...I just bought a new freakin power supply last year! I had 2 others that failed before that ffs (actually it was the same one that failed, got repaired, and then failed again) :(( Is there a way to know for sure? And why would it be all of a sudden like that?

Oh and by the way my comp doesn't have a speaker so I can't know if it beeps something when it starts...That's right, computer with no speaker...-_-

Not even that funky little error sound when you hit too many keys at the same time? ._.

Well, it COULD be possible that you bought the wrong power supply. If a powersupply's maximum is being exceeded, well, you know what'll happen.

Had a similar problem before, turned out my motherboard had fried(the wierd thing was that i had been on vacation -> came home, nothing :S). It doesnt really sound like a software problem either, and since the harddrive sounds normal it cant be that thing.

Unluckly you dont seem to have much time, but you could always take it to a computer support shop or something?

EDIT : Might be the power supply aswell

I get that funky error sound through the actual speakers, not the computer's tiny internal one which I don't have :p

And I don't know man, I bought the power supply that was recommended to me by the guy who made my computer.
And now that I think of it...FUCK...I do get quite a few bsod's with MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION, which according to this guide I found online means either a bad cpu or one that's too overclocked (which I don't think it's the case) or a faulty power supply...Jesus fucking christ!

EDIT: oh shit not the motherboard again...I had a motherboard that fried up LAST YEAR and had to replace it...WHAT THE FUCK!?!?! I forgot which were the symptoms for it though...

Thank you guys for trying to help! <3

EDIT 2: OH DEAR GOD!!
http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/...ter-wont-initialize-urgent-help-needed-64518/
Looks like it's the same thing....except now I hear the hard disk running. :((((((((((
I ain't listening to shit that guy tells me about computers from now on (he happens to be my sister's boyfriend).

What kind of monitor do you own? Do you own another one you can test with that computer? It's not likely, but there's a small chance it's a blown back light or something.

Could you also list your parts?

Open her up and take the small button battery out of the mainboard, leave it for 15 minutes, then put the battery back in. Sometimes that is caused by BIOS corrupting, taking the battery out resets it.

And it's most likely not the PSU because the fans and HDD still work.

And it is either the Mainboard or the CPU is fried, basically because the fans don't slow down, the motherboard fan control is operating, but no real way of testing if it's board or CPU, unless you stick the CPU into another computer and see if it runs.

Now the board could have been fried by the PSU, if you tell me the Manufacturer, Model, and Wattage I can tell you if it's good.

Just because the fans and HDD work, doesn't mean it can't still be the power supply. It doesn't sound like it, but you can't rule it out.

I would lean towards the motherboard frying, not the CPU. Either way it sucks though.

if it's not a hardware problem, that do the battery thing.

It worked for me one week ago. (i had the same problem too. Caused by corrupt BIOS)

I had my laptop do something like this a while ago. One day it just wouldn't work. I powered it on but the screen was just completely blank and the computer didn't respond to anything. I took it to get looked at and everyone just told me the same thing: the motherboard is probably fried. Turns out it was my sound card. They replaced it and it worked like always. It was a hell of alot cheaper than replacing the motherboard or buying a new computer. Hopefully your problem resolves itself in a similar (cheap) manner.

I have never heard of that PSU manufacture. And it doesn't help that their site is completely Chinese.

It's not on the tiered list either T.T

Can't assess it's stability without you mailing it to me XD

Basically, did the thing weigh alot, light power supplys usually are crap (Heatsink size)

and if you are getting a new PSU: http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx

Try to get a 3 or higher, even I only have a tier 2

Anyways, it's most likely the main board, check Newegg for new ones compatible with your AM2 processor (basically every fricken AMD board, short of the ones with DDR3)

Dammit...well at least now I know not to take any more advice from that guy :p. And since this is the case I think I'll buy a new system anyway, it would be about time.
Do you have any reccomandations for which parts should I get? I'd like a system that's decent at both games and graphics processing and the likes, not just a workstation or a super gaming machine. Some quad core processor that's not too expensive and also what brand and type of RAM you'd reccomend, I suck at knowing the differences between good and bad ones. And of course what motherboard? I just need one that'll last more than 1 year -_-. And lastly what manufacturer is good for graphics cards?

Thanks a lot for trying to help me, I really appreciate it :)

on a side note, is it just me, or have we been helping people get new rigs together a lot recently? xD

It's time really, new processor architectures have come out of both AMD and Intel, people are build refreshing.

I know I did, I went from a 65nm Core 2 to a 45nm Phenom 2, even though the Core 2 was broken and I was stuck on a Pentium 3.

Some quad core processor that's not too expensive
Expensive by what measure, under $200 or over $200

Under $200 your stuck with the Q8's, Q6's, Phenom 1, and Phenom 2 8's
Over $200 you get the Q9's and Phenom 2 9's

And if you really feel like spending, i7 for $280, but the motherboards and RAM for it is expensive.

For graphics cards, I use MSI for ATI and EVGA for Nvidia, just stay away from Powercolor and Apollo.

Also, along with the budget, are you going to reuse anything from your current build? Although I think you should get a new HDD, the 500gb per platter ones are out, and are insanely fast (but those damn raptors still beat them -.-)

Well the budget isn't that much of a problem since I'll ask my folks for a loan and pay them back monthly with the fruits of my labor.

The Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz skt 1366 Nehalem cought my attention. I read that it's similar to the Phenom II x4 955 in terms of gaming performance, but much better in graphics/video apps like 3ds max and premiere and the likes, so that's why it wins for me. Also the Phenom is only a little cheaper than that i7.
But I dunno about parts for it :/...I heard that OCZ memories are the shizzle, but there's so damn many types of them and I don't know what's the difference between them except price and looks lol...
For graphics I was hoping for a gtx295 but god damn it's expensive...my 2 months salary :|...so don't think so

Anyway the most important things for me are the processor, RAM and motherboard; Gpu comes second.

EDIT: I've seen on the site I'm searching that people who bought a motherboard for this cpu also bought Corsair 6GB DDR3 1600 MHz CL8 XMS3 DHX Triple Channel Kit memories. How good are they? And damn your right the motherboards are expensive :S. 4-5 months of work will go into this.

Ok, high budget ^^

Btw, 280's are overpriced, the 4850X2 beats the GTX285 (yes 285) for $220, and it actually is a workstation class card.

Phenom 2 955 is actually the same performance as the Q9550, i7 kicks all of them in the ass.

Board/CPU

Video Card/RAM

Heatsink

Heatsink Bracket (The heatsink doesn't come with LGA1366 bracket -.-)

PSU (Tier 1 ^^, basically one of the highest quality PSU's you can get)

HDD

You should decide on the case, but I recommend the HAF932 for Full Tower or NZXT Tempest for Mid

Tempest does beat the Antec 900 in cooling, and HAF932 is the best cooling case on the market, short of Factory watercooling.

Another thing is if you have the budget, 4850X2's can be Crossfired, and the PSU and Board can handle CF'd 4850X2's, CF'ing those babys give you a hell of alot more power than a 295, for about the same price.

Basically do what you want to the setup, but all those components are the best for the money, you would need about $40 for a better board, $200 for a better processor, $50 for a better cooling setup (Watercooling, no heatsink has beat the CCTF yet), $150 for a better Single slot video card ($100 for Crossfired GTX260's/4870's), $30 for a better HDD (2 of the 500gb versions in Raid), and those cases are pretty much the best you can get.

I think I am the best here for putting computers together... ^^

Oh yes, remember to ground yourself while putting it together, and apply thermal paste (2nd best kind comes with the heatsink, best is Artic Sliver 5) in a rice (after cooking) sized drop and let the heatsink squish it down.

AND ALWAYS READ THE MOTHERBOARD MANUAL!

You can easily OC a 280 to 285 levels without causing any damage really... I'm doing it currently.

I think I am the best here for putting computers together... ^^

Meh, don't get full of yourself. It depends on what you're building it for, i wouldn't get an ATI card in my life because of the lack of PhysX support and how important that is for the work i do.

($100 for Crossfired GTX260's/4870's)

Crossfired GTX260's? wut?

Seagate Barracudas are good, i have 3 500GB barracudas atm.

Crossfired/SLI It's really basically the same thing, they even share some patents.

And PhysX? Thats for games... You mean CUDA.

You have the 250gb/Platter 7200.11's right? The ones I recommended are 7200.12's which are the newer 500gb/Platter, which gives even better data rates in Random Access.

Anyways, not many games support PhysX, and if he wants it, there is a 3rd PCI-E at 8x, which is what the external PhysX card runs at, and with all the money he saved, he gets better performance for the same price, yay.

The 4850X2 is about 6% better than the GTX280, and 1% better than the GTX285 (Not much really) BUT, the 4850X2 is a better overclocker than either.

And if you O/C'd a 280 to 285 level, good for you, now what if the person with the 285 O/C's his?

Edit: and you forgot the 4850X2 is a Gaming AND Workstation Card.

Crossfired and SLI certainly are not the same, lol, there's a big enough difference between the two.

I have 3 500GB barracudas 7200RPM.

Did i say my rig was for gaming? No, i said it was for the WORK i do (which is game development, and the certain game i'm working uses PhysX, so yeah... lol)

Thanks a lot for the recommandations :D All that stuff is around my budget (I hope lol), except that psu is a bit too expensive, what tier 2 would you reccomend? Also OCZ memories seem to be a rarity 'round here (and it's not worth buying them from newegg since I'm from eastern europe), so would some Corsairs do (is this brand good)? These are the corsairs available: http://www.pcgarage.ro/memorii/corsair/filtre/general-tip-ddr3/
Or what other brand?

And as for the case, would something like this be good?
http://www.pcgarage.ro/carcase/cooler-master/cm-690/

Oh and I don't think I'm going to be the one to assemble this thing since I blow at this stuff.

690's are decent, but the problem is now, CM 690's can't fit a 4850X2, it's too long. My friend has one and it barely fits a 4870X2, I know it's weird, but the 4850X2 is longer than the 4870X2. It's about 28.5cm.

Same with Antec 900's

ALSO, you have to buy the memory in sets of 3, not 2. i7 uses a triple-dimm system. So Deathcom3s' memory wouldn't work.

If only you could buy off Newegg.... Best prices there. Well, seeing as how I am not sure what you can find at European E-tailers, might as well give you the List

Try to find this one though, should go for about 485 of your RON.

Edit: I do try my best to use foreign measures when I learn you are foreign.

Alright then, what memories do you suggest? Would these be good?:
http://www.pcgarage.ro/memorii/corsair/6gb-ddr3-1600-mhz-cl8-xms3-dhx-triple-channel-kit/
And also what case would you suggest?

And lastly I can't find that psu, all I could find from the tier 2 list that would fit the price I want are:
Antec EarthWatts 380W
Antec EarthWatts 430W
Antec EarthWatts 500W
Antec EarthWatts 650W
Antec TruePowerTrio 550-EC 550W
Corsair CMPSU-450VX
Corsair CMPSU-450HX 450W
Corsair CMPSU-550VX
Corsair CMPSU-520HX
Enermax PRO 82+ 425W
Enermax MODU82+ 425W
PC Power&Cooling Silencer 370W PPCS370X
PC Power&Cooling Silencer 420W PPCS420X

Nah, none of those would work, you would need 650 watts minimum to run a 4850X2 and i7, but there would be no headroom for overclocking or additions of multiple CD-Drives and hard drives and your computer would start crapping out in a year due to the capacitors aging SOOO, you'll need at least a 750, unless you will get a new PSU in a year.

Now if you want to add a 2nd 4850X2 you'll need around 900 watts, but you will only need 850 for a single 4850, Tri-Fire is fun :).

That RAM is overpriced anyways, same performance here and better performance here.

Now take the money saved in the RAM and spend it on a better PSU

In all the years of me building computers, one of the most important things I have learned is NEVER SKIMP ON THE PSU.

Edit: Here is my little calc, set capacitor aging to 20% and everything on 100% power usage (It will happen at some point), don't forget to add in the fans and sound cards.

Aham, alrighty then, I'll go for a better PSU.
I don't plan on buying a second video card for crossfire, from what I've seen this card can do it's more than enough for me.
That calculator thingy said I'd need 595W if I did stuff correctly :p. Didn't put in the fans though since I have no idea about them. Speaking of which, case recommendations?

Woo, that's a nice case :D
Well, I think I'll go for a 750w psu since that calculator thingy now says I need 661. And I can't decide between the Corsair 750HX and Corsair 750TX...what's the difference between them except price?

The 280 and 270 are good because of their reduced power consumption for their range over other geforce 200 cards due to reduced manufature size. I personally from the specs could not tell a major or noticable difference between the 270 and 280 next to clock, which some OC can bridge. The only other difference was the 270 was 80£ cheaper than the 280 which swung it for me to a 270.

ATI cards I generally avoid because they mess around to much with them and do not actually go for fine tuning. ATI can be looked as a company which prety much throws everything into a bundle and says it is the best. If it is not the best they throw more into it until it is. When trying to install ATI drivers for an old computer, not only did they not work (suspite the card clearly being from ATI)... but they also installed a ton of addware like WoW trial and crap although it was from the offical AMD site. I have never had such blatend explotation from a graphic driver from nvidia and thus why I remain loyal to them, as their products are easy to step and use with no problems what so ever. Yes ATI currently leads marganly over nvidia due to throwing in better stuff like GDDR5 and smaller manufacture size and usless DX10.1 support, but their cards do not have any physics acceleration that is universal nor do they have as much compatibility as nvidia cards do listening to complaints on the internet.

Thus its 50:50 for you, one way gives you better visuals for your money but comes with stuff that could potentially annoy you, the other comes with probably better support and also will always be useful (in the future when you use a better card you can use it to boost game physics and stuff or a second screen).

As sound cards were mentioned somewhere, I will post this. . .
Unless you are into making (not listening) to music, a sound card is pretty pointless. Most integrated sound cards generate prety high quality audio now (do not think they never improve them) with output rates far beyond that of most household devices so I doubt you will notice the difference. Also all modern games do not make any use of sound cards for preformance boosting at all, infact DirectX 10/11 on vista does not provide support for them in its sound interface at all so you will get no preformance gain ingame at all. Infact soundcards are well known to cause major problems in games as the way they work can result in games dropping to a crawl (well known with TES oblivion and others).

Anyway back to TDR, I adivse checking your monitor (screen/display/whatever you want to call it) for what connections it has. Modern graphic cards for gamming only use digital connectors (DVI) and so old analogue ones will need an adaptor to be used (they still can output analogue via them). This should not be a problem as the cards are mostly shipped with an adaptor supplied, but you should just check to make sure. Any new display should support DVI and if your current one already does, then you are all set as you can plug them straight in.

I didn't get shit off my drivers...

You must have used the CD that came with the video card.

And how many good games use PhysX?

Not any I play apparently :)

Edit: Anyways, when Havok's Hardware Acceleration comes out, PhysX is going to be left in the dust.

Hmm I don't know man, I'm starting to incline more towards nvidia here...I keep reading how terrible the ATI drivers are, lots of people seem to have trouble with it and recently I read that the hd4850x2 is awful in Source SDK and that it has glitches in TF2 (and I'm an avid TF2 player). I'm really starting to consider an EVGA GTX275 instead of the ATI, since it's a bit cheaper and the tech specs don't differ that much even though the ATI one is basically dual; the 275 actually has higher clock speeds for both gpu and memory. The transfer rate is only a bit bigger for the ATI one...So dunno, but I think I'll go for the 275. I won't play stuff at super high resolutions anyway, so won't really need those 2GB of ram.
And if I find myself in a wealthy position in the future I could always buy another one and go sli...or buy whatever will be new on the market then :p.

As for sound cards I could use one since I am into making music and I know how shit my guitar sounds plugged into the on-board soundcard, but I can do without for now.

My monitor has DVI. It's an oldy Samsung SyncMaster930BF (I think; memory right now because I'm lazy to go to my room and turn on the light and shit) but it's good.

As for the power supply, which one? Corsair 750HX or Corsair 750TX? There's quite a significant price difference for one little letter :p. Also what's the difference between a modular psu and a regular one?

And finally, I've seen many builds on the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4 so I looked into it and surprisingly it's much cheaper than the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 but I couldn't see major differences between them...so...what's the difference that makes it better?

the UD5 has heatsinks on the voltage regulator's for the CPU, and therefore allows higher overclocks.

The difference between them is that the more expensive one is better XD, it has 80Plus Bronze I think, which is better energy efficiency, and modular means you can take unused cables off the actual PSU, like say you don't need extra Sata Power cables, take it off!

Don't need those floppys? Take it off! But don't take the ones that are hardwired on the PSU, that would be bad. Modular ones connect with plugs :p

Sound Card, don't need it, DVI on monitor, good, most videocards don't have VGA anymore.

The 275 is about 10% worse than the 4850X2, thats alot. And I have never had TF2 problems on mine, must be old drivers they use, don't use the ones off the CD then :p

Edit: Holy Batman, searching around Newegg and found this 4870

You can buy 2 for the price of one 4850X2 or 1 GTX275 and completely outperform either, but it doesn't leave much room for upgrade. Also, use it with promo code: EMCLVMV36

That takes $15 off :p, but only valid until Midnight 7-19

Well I guess it's because the 4870X2 technically uses less watts, and you can put a 2nd on...

Thing is though, the 4870X2 is only about 4% better than the 4850X2, and the price difference >.<

Telling you, 4850X2 is the way to go.

Alrighty then.
Have a few more questions though:
1. will a Cooler Master V8 (I found the cooler you recommended but not the bracket; also this one looks much better hehe) fit in the NZXT Tempest? (I've seen it fits :p)
2. dumb question: will the 1600Mhz ram work on that motherboard which says that supports 2000/1333/1066 MHz? I mean, does it have to be only exactly 1333, 2000 etc. or can it be in-between, like the 1600?...just want to make sure.

and the V8 is horrible, uses up twice the power and gives LESS cooling performance >.<

Try to find the bracket, the Core Contact Freezer is the best air cooled heatsink for i7, Titan did make one slightly better, but no i7 bracket yet

Hai again.
Well this thing didn't happen due to lack of funds (just bought a new motherboard 'cause the old piece of shit was out of warranty), but now due to my birthday I find myself in the possession of a rather...large amount of money and I can afford the config mentioned here with no problem.
The thing is whether I should do it or if I should wait for the new stuff to come out like the i9 and the next generation of dx11 cards...because I can't use the money for 3 months (well I can but I'll lose the tasty interest) and those things are due to come out in the next months.
I think I should wait, eh?

Yes, definitely wait for the 4 DAYS for the HD5870 to come out, it will probably make the prices go down extremely fast, Nvidia is going to have a problem soon, they can't make GTX260's cheaper or else they stop gaining revenue from it, like with Sony and the PS3

And American pennies, costs 1.5 cents to make a cent

GTX380 don't even start coming out till Jan either, and the performance of them should be about the same.

Well, 4 days for US release, not sure about Europe

Amazingly, GTX300 doesn't even have full DX11 support, or even 10.1

BlargHonk, please support your information if it is not commonly known with refferences. Currently there is no noticable mention of the geforce 300 series on both nvidia and wikipedia stating that it does not support DX11 or that it is comming out in january. Wikipedia states Q4 2009 and that it probably will have DX11, so eithor you know something people do not (in which case you will have to state or link your source) or you are spreading false information.

Um that makes no sense, a company will always gain revenue as long as they do not give away the produce or pay people to use it. I believe you mean profit which is the net flow of money (the difference between money being spent and the income from sales.

Personally, I like nvidia as its products are generally high quality and reliable.

Profit, Revenue, mix them up alot.

I heard both on tech websites

Can't find the exact articles however >.<

Basically it said the GT300's won't have full DX11 support, like what they did with the FX5000's.

It also said due to the chip yields they are getting, they will have to push back release, it was something like a 2% yield

CUDA is null with DX11 :D Unless Micro doesn't code DirectCompute correctly

I think one of the sites was HardOCP, and the other was Tom's Hardware

Hey I was wondering that maybe if I'll gather more money until the i9 comes out, I could do a dual-cpu setup with 2 hexacore xeons for extreme rendering power. Buuuut I heard that the memory for xeons is different and slower? And also xeon motherboards have less fancy PCI express stuff? I don't really know, coul anyone elighten me?

And as a random fact, so you can see just how much time I'm wasting on renders now, I did the cinebench benchmark on this piece of shit and it finished in a blazing 9 minutes 42 seconds...a core i7 does it in around 45 seconds...I died a little inside.

Lol

Anyways, Xeon boards do have less fancy features, and slower memory yes.

Not to mention the prices of the processors are much higher.

Basically unless you find a weird board, or Intel does a Skulltrail again, no SLI or CF for you. And the slower memory is because Server's don't need fast memory, just alot of it.

And by dog, what would you do with 24 cores? (2x6x2[HyperThreading])

And who said they would be called i9's? They shall be called: Bob, the wonder i7

Rendering dude, rendering. The more cores, the faster. Though yeah I don't think the xeons are worth it, expensive just because you can put 2 of them on a motherboard and slow memory is kinda poo, since I need memory for polygons and textures, must be fast.

Well, just put fast memory in T.T

All the boards for the Hexa's can do 1333, and 1600 with tweaking.

And Polygons and Textures don't need fast memory, just alot of it XD.

And more cores=faster only to a point, I don't think any rendering program does any more than 16 currently
