Cell game - testers needed

I need as many people as I can to test this game thing. You can't do much in the game but I want to see how many people can run it.

How to run

  • Unzip it.
  • Double-click RunCellGame.bat to play. You need to have java installed to run it.
  • If it crashes or won't start, copy the last few lines in CellGame.log and paste them into a comment here. You can ignore the other error text files it creates.
  • Sorry, but I've only made it work for windows (for now). Please try it under Wine or something though!

Controls

  • Arrow keys to move
  • Click anywhere to fire antibodies
  • ` to toggle the debug info
  • Esc to quit

You should see something like this if it is running correctly :D

Appears to work fine, though what's with the FPS? 950? Oh and colours look odd, uploading screenshot.

Could you tell me what version your directx is? (Run > dxdiag)

Works fine here

Well it appears to work on Vista but the colors are all very dark and weird.

That's good. Can you tell me what version your directx is as well? (Run > dxdiag)

And 950FPS? Sheesh, you got one hell of a computer! :0 I only have 350ish

(The colors are fine by the way. They're just temporary textures :p)

DirectX 10, Windows Vista 32-bit. Haha, yeah.. it was pretty much the latest news.. one and a half year ago. GTX280 isn't half bad still though. :p

Probably, I'm a Java programmer, so I've got pretty much the latest Java software installed.

.. from the error report posted further up. Would that mean it is trying to access DX9 and not 10, which is the version he has? Seems odd though.

It works totally fine on my computer. I have Windows XP 32-bit. DirectX 9.0c
And the highest FPS I got was 100. But I have a question though, why does the FPS increase when my little "thing" is moving from the black stuff and towards the models? Shouldn't it be more "challenging" for the GPU to process the models instead of the blackness?

It also needs something to update. A completely black picture (sorry for misspell.. dunno how it occurred to me) does not need to be updated and would produce very low FPS, while movement on the screen increases the FPS until your GPU can't handle any more.

I don't think so. The program just keeps updating the frames as fast as it can, no matter what you're looking at. So I dunno why.
The models themselves though are not very high poly so that shouldn't be an issue.

By the way, could those of you who are having a problem try the attached program instead? Use the RunCellGame.bat.

Well, I always get higher FPS when there is movement on the screen, though I get a more stable FPS while the game is paused/standing still. Of course, if the movement increases over a certain limit, the FPS goes down again.

Works fine with me. FPS average was 34. Max was about 40, and worst was 0.9something.

I had hours of fun with it. Shooting things and stuff.
Hehe, joke.

I wish I could make something remotely like that. Best programing I ever did, was in robocode, and it was still lame...

Just wondering, but how fast is the movement on that fps? Like... stupidly fast?

It's normal. It doesn't look like it 2x speed or anything, or maybe a little. The thing spins really fast when I'm moving along the sides. But the "walking" is normal, unless it's supposed to move slow.

I tested it and it ran at ~35 fps.
It seems a little low considering I play Warcraft III at ~25-30 fps and it doesn't look like your game is very graphically demanding. I would not suggest using Java for this, as from my experience java is fairly slow compared to other programming languages. IMO it shouldn't be used for game development at all, but I am not very experienced in either so I could be totally wrong.

Anyways, good job and it's looking good.
