Not sure on your uses of black for example in front of your sword, also you have fire coming off behind the sword but you also have fire from a completely different direction as the background.

Basically the foreground object is not in sync with the background, you can either remove the background flame or the flame behind the sword, personally I think it would look better with just the background flame specially if you make the blade of the sword bigger and simply not show the hilt.
 
I think this: brightest and saturated colors for the metallic part of the weapon, a more stylized dash and a darker background are the keys for an item icon, else you need a better contrast of style, and try using thiner lines, else the concept is good and it has a good execution, the things im pointing are little and are meant to upgrade your style.
