Glad you like the model, as for any other mapping tools than ultimate unwrap i know of chilliskinner. thats a free program but it doesnt unwrap complex meshes which is almost all meshes I personally use ultimate unwrap 3d which cost me 40 dollars. It is well worth it if your willing to pay. As for my model here i know its not that complex but i personally enjoy making "unique", "from scratch" models. Also no matter how simple your model is it always takes alot of time to make any model from scratch.
