enjoy: It lacks highlights, definition, and shading. The shape isn't smooth, which it should be. Also, gold is made by using yellow, orange, white, and kinda cloak green. Not just yellow. It also lacks a background, and I think you should try showing the item from another angle.

enjoy: Shape is still bumpy.

Okay, where to start.

  • Shading
  • Hightlights
  • The shape is not round, looks like it's eye shaped.
  • The color is good for a ring.... But the red ruins it. If it were a gem, of some sorts, it should be better shaped and stand out.
  • It needs a background, showing it is magical. Maybe some purple or pink magic.
  • Please do not think badly of me for these.

Hm i know only from half what you mean and thx :)

I suggest you to read through this tutorial, even if it's not especially for icon creating it shows you how to get different materials look good and realistic with gimp/cs and only freehand work: http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/2d-art-tutorials-281/mr-goblins-tutorial-110127/

With some training this will soon show you the path to good works, try it :p

I read that but didnt see gold there :/

I did not really want to show you a specific material, but mainly techniques and use of opacity, by this it's easy to create every material you want to get.
Basically for gold, i suggest to use a yellow base... and lighten up the light parts with lower opacity white, until it get very intense at the hot spots, shade it with 10 - 15 % opacity dark on the shadow sides, also adding some scratches with 20 - 50 % opacity white or 10 -25 % opactiy black with a 1px brush could give it an extra worn golden touch ;)
Try it a bit and I guess you'll get some nice results ;)

how true this is :D
I had also problems with gold textures ... look at my http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/icons-541/btncrownamuletfinished-153629/ . It was a piece of shit before I used a similar method as M0rbid tells you here. Now I can call it a piece of art. :p
Well, do what M0rbid says, he's right in every way. :xxd:
BTW ...

So first:

A really HUGE improvement you did there already and this is very good seeing what you come up with now.
I'll give a review now, that actually might be harsh or very critical at some points, but on the other hand if I only say, wow, amazing, it won't help you to improve, so please do not be offended.
The shading you added is very nice and I especially like the fact that you though about how the light would react inside the ring, that's a good start for sure. Also the red diamant in it looks nice already.
Two main issues make this icon still lacking though. First of: The form of the ring. What it needs is "ROUND ROUND ROUND".... YOu can easily see how to create this round ring by googel "ring" or take a look at LOTR's ring ;)

Second one are still the materials. You might want to take a look at my signature, seeing the metal. And you might see, that there are some scratches in it, which always gives your icon a realistic touch (my work could need an improvement there a lot, too, but that's not the point here :p I only want to show you, what I mean ;) ) Same goes for the golden part, again this has nice shadings right now, but for me it is tooo yellow.

I'm not sure, if you should continue this icon, because it's quite hard for a start off, very small tracks that you have to draw. I suggest you to see this as a training and to come up with a new icon in which you put all the things you learned while drawing this one. But I can tell you, keep it up, the way you learned the shadowing and the improvement really shows, that you should continue ;)

If you need further help, feel free to ask me ;)
